The cardinal gave statements to the BBC before Mass on Christmas Eve, faced with the prospect that restrictions on worship would be enacted again.

Newsroom (December 30, 2021, 6:00 PM, Gaudium Press) Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster, has made an appeal to Boris Johnson not to impose further restrictions on churches in England and Wales.

The cardinal gave statements to the BBC before the Christmas Eve mass, faced with the prospect that restrictions on worship would be enacted again due to the spread of variant omicron in England.

The cardinal assured that the Church has been strict with protective measures and that churches “are not places where the virus is spread.”

“We know what we must do”

“I sincerely appeal to you not to consider closing churches and places of worship anymore,” he insisted.

“I think this country has shown that people can make good judgments for themselves,” he continued. “We know what we should do. Most people are sensible and cautious. We don’t need stricter impositions to teach us what to do.”

Although the spread data for the new variant is high, Covid deaths in England remain in a steady range.

Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have introduced restrictions, such as cancelling New Year’s Eve parties and other social gatherings, while in England Johnson has not yet called for new measures, although he recommends working from home (home office) if possible, wearing masks in public places, etc.
