Chile celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Carmel as pilgrims gather in Maipú and preparations continue for the 1926 coronation centenary.

Newsroom (16/07/2026 Gaudium Press ) Today, July 16, the Catholic Church in Chile celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Carmel, one of the country’s most cherished Marian devotions and a spiritual tradition deeply woven into its national identity. The annual observance brings together thousands of faithful who honor the Virgin of Carmel, revered throughout the nation as Queen and Mother of Chile.

Marking the occasion, Cardinal Fernando Chomali, Archbishop of Santiago, invited Catholics to participate in a pilgrimage to the Templo Votivo de Maipú, one of the country’s most significant Marian sanctuaries. The celebration includes a Holy Mass at noon local time, presided over by the cardinal.

“This Thursday, July 16, we will make our pilgrimage to the temple of Maipú to celebrate our Queen and Mother,” Cardinal Chomali said, encouraging the faithful to gather in prayer and thanksgiving.

Reflecting on the enduring meaning of the devotion, the archbishop emphasized the spiritual values associated with the Virgin of Carmel. According to Cardinal Chomali, veneration of the Blessed Virgin reflects aspirations toward “purity, humility, service, holiness and concern for others,” qualities that ultimately express a commitment to fulfilling God’s will with love.

A Devotion Rooted in Faith and Tradition

The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, celebrated annually on July 16, is one of the most widely observed Marian commemorations in the Catholic Church. Originating from the biblical tradition associated with Mount Carmel and later nurtured by the Carmelite Order, devotion to the Virgin of Carmel has spread worldwide as a sign of confidence in Mary’s maternal protection and intercession.

In Chile, however, the devotion possesses a uniquely national dimension. The Virgin of Carmel was officially proclaimed Patroness of Chile and was solemnly crowned Queen and Mother of Chile in December 1926. The coronation became a powerful symbol of the close relationship between the faith of the Chilean people and the maternal presence of Mary throughout the country’s history.

Centenary Celebrations Underway

This year’s observance forms part of a broader commemorative journey leading to the centenary of the coronation of the Virgin of Carmel, which is being celebrated throughout 2026. The anniversary has adopted the theme: “Mother of Chile, protect us and lead us to your Son, Jesus.”

The centenary program encompasses numerous liturgical, pastoral and educational initiatives involving parishes, schools, local communities and ecclesial movements across the country. Organizers hope the celebrations will renew devotion to the Virgin while strengthening the faith of future generations.

In a joint letter to Catholic communities, Father Rodrigo Cordero Torres, Episcopal Vicar for Pastoral Ministry, and Macarena Mackenna Rueda, president of the National Confraternity of Carmel, outlined a calendar of events accompanying the commemoration.

Their message described the coronation of the Virgin of Carmel as “a living sign that has shaped Chile’s spiritual identity.” The anniversary, they wrote, provides an opportunity not only to remember the past with gratitude but also to renew the Church’s commitment to continue its mission under Mary’s protection.

Among the most significant events planned is the Mass for the Centenary of the Coronation of the Virgin of Carmel, scheduled for July 30 at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago. The celebration, to be presided over by Chile’s bishops, will serve as an act of thanksgiving and prayer for the nation. Additional pilgrimages, Marian gatherings and national celebrations are planned throughout the year.

Reflecting on a National Symbol of Faith

The centenary has also inspired renewed reflection on the spiritual and cultural significance of the Virgin of Carmel. During a recent celebration, Bishop Galo Fernández of Talca highlighted the enduring presence of the Virgin throughout Chilean history, noting her influence on family life, traditional customs and the broader spirituality of the nation.

According to the bishop, the 1926 coronation represented the Church’s desire to accompany the life of the country through both a public profession of faith and a commitment to service. His remarks underscored the continued relevance of Marian devotion as a source of unity and spiritual guidance.

From Colonial Devotion to National Heritage

Devotion to Our Lady of Carmel arrived in the Americas through the Carmelite tradition and expanded during the Spanish colonial era. In Chile, the devotion quickly took root and became one of the most influential expressions of popular Catholic spirituality. Over the centuries, numerous communities, confraternities and religious celebrations dedicated to the Virgin of Carmel emerged across the country.

The devotion gained particular national importance during Chile’s struggle for independence. Following the Battle of Maipú in 1818, a solemn vow was made that ultimately led to the construction of the Shrine of Maipú, built in gratitude for what believers regarded as Mary’s protection during a pivotal moment in the nation’s history.

What began as a devotional tradition introduced during the colonial period gradually evolved into a defining feature of Chile’s religious identity. Today, the shrine remains one of the country’s most important pilgrimage destinations, drawing faithful from every region and serving as a visible reminder of the enduring bond between Chile and its patroness.

As the Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Carmel and continues preparations for the coronation centenary, the devotion remains a powerful expression of faith, history and national spiritual heritage, connecting generations of Chileans through a shared trust in the maternal protection of the Virgin Mary.
