The exposition, the first public display of St. Francis’s remains, underscores his timeless message of generosity in an era often defined by individualism

Newsroom (10/10/2025, Gaudium Press ) Just a few days after the announcement of the public exposition of St. Francis of Assisi mortal remains, more than 30,000 pilgrims have secured online reservations to pray before the relics of the revered Founder of the Franciscan Order. The historic event, set for February 22 to March 22, 2026, in the lower church of the Basilica of St. Francis, marks a centerpiece of the Franciscan centenary, commemorating the saint’s death while celebrating his enduring legacy as a beacon of selflessness and spiritual kinship.

The exposition, the first public display of St. Francis’s remains, underscores his timeless message of generosity in an era often defined by individualism. “We are amazed and grateful for the warm reception to the announcement on October 4,” said Friar Giulio Cesareo, OFMConv., Director of the Sacred Convent’s Communications Office. “This outpouring reflects the deep love for St. Francis. We hope this will not only be a spiritual journey but also a culturally enriching experience, encouraging more authentic and generous relationships.”

Pilgrims will have two options for veneration, selected during booking: a group experience guided by a Friar, featuring a brief meditation in languages including Italian, English, Spanish, German, and Polish, or a personal moment of quiet prayer. The guided experience will offer spiritual context, fostering a deeper connection to St. Francis’s legacy. For other languages, inquiries can be sent to info@sanfrancescovive.org. Each participant will receive a commemorative gift from the Friars’ Community following a brief liturgical rite.

To ensure accessibility, tailored itineraries are available for individuals with motor or visual disabilities, with specific needs to be noted during the mandatory, free reservation process. The event is designed to be inclusive, with two daily international Masses (11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.) held in the upper church from Monday to Saturday, and special evening veneration sessions for families, religious communities, Secular Franciscans, and people with disabilities.

Reservations are required to manage crowds, ensure safety, and create an intimate experience, with limited daily access to reduce waiting times amid winter weather. Comprehensive details, including reservation procedures, are available in Italian and English at www.sanfrancescovive.org.

The exposition celebrates St. Francis’s enduring influence, inviting pilgrims to reflect on his life of radical giving, which continues to inspire after 800 years.
