Jordan prepares for Christ’s 2030 Baptism Jubilee, as Church leaders call for spiritual renewal, unity, and global pilgrimage at holy site.

Newsroom (21/05/2026 Gaudium Press) Jordan has begun formal preparations for the 2030 jubilee marking the 2,000th anniversary of the baptism of Jesus Christ, as religious leaders and government officials highlight the event’s spiritual and global significance. At the center of the initiative is Bethany Beyond the Jordan, the revered site where Christians believe Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist.

During a recent gathering of Church leaders hosted by King Abdullah II on May 18 at the historic site, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, emphasized that the baptism of Christ transcends history.

“The baptism of Christ is not merely a historical memory but an eternal event that continues to speak to every believer,” he said.

The remarks underscored a broader vision for the jubilee—not simply as an anniversary, but as a moment of spiritual renewal for Christians worldwide.

Royal Backing for a Global Religious Event

King Abdullah II announced that Jordan will officially adopt and support the jubilee initiative, which is set to culminate in 2030. The government plans to upgrade infrastructure and visitor services at the baptism site in anticipation of a significant increase in pilgrims, while safeguarding the location’s sacred character.

The king also affirmed his personal commitment to overseeing the preparations, reflecting Jordan’s longstanding role in protecting religious sites and fostering coexistence in the region.

Church leaders welcomed the royal endorsement, describing it as a historic opportunity to reinforce Christian unity and reenergize pilgrimage traditions tied to the Holy Land.

Bethany Beyond the Jordan: A Living Site of Faith

Situated on the eastern bank of the Jordan River, opposite Jericho, Bethany Beyond the Jordan holds profound spiritual importance for Christians across denominations. Recognized in Scripture as the place where Jesus entered the waters to begin his public ministry, the site symbolizes both the sanctification of creation and the start of Christ’s mission.

Its universal value was formally acknowledged in 2015 when UNESCO inscribed it on the World Heritage List. Archaeological discoveries—including remnants of ancient churches and monasteries—attest to centuries of devotion, while modern pilgrims continue to gather for prayer, reflection, and liturgical celebrations.

The site’s enduring appeal has made it a major destination for religious tourism, drawing thousands annually to the banks of the Jordan River.

A Call for Renewal and Encounter

Cardinal Pizzaballa framed the upcoming jubilee as an invitation to deepen spiritual awareness and rediscover the meaning of baptism.

“This initiative is a call to look forward with faith and responsibility,” he said. “The baptism site must remain a living place, where visitors do not simply come to see but encounter God and rediscover the depth of their baptism.”

Church leaders stressed that preparations must extend beyond infrastructure. They called for local development efforts, including staff training and site management, to ensure that Bethany Beyond the Jordan remains a place of active faith.

At the same time, they urged collaboration with churches and Christian institutions worldwide to encourage broad participation in the jubilee celebrations.

A Symbol of Peace and Reconciliation

Beyond its liturgical importance, the 2030 jubilee is being positioned as a global spiritual event with a message of reconciliation and hope. Church authorities view the baptism site not only as a place of remembrance but as a symbol capable of fostering unity among believers and bridging cultures.

Cardinal Pizzaballa expressed gratitude for Jordan’s stewardship of the sacred location, praising its role in promoting interfaith harmony and regional peace.

“In this blessed land,” he said, “we see in your leadership a living example of how faith can become a bridge between peoples and a foundation for peace in the world.”

Looking Ahead to 2030

As preparations gain momentum, Bethany Beyond the Jordan is poised to welcome pilgrims from across the globe. The jubilee aims to offer a tangible connection to the origins of Christ’s ministry while presenting the site as a living testament to faith, coexistence, and spiritual renewal.

For both Jordan and the global Christian community, the 2030 anniversary represents more than a historical commemoration—it is an opportunity to reengage with the meaning of baptism and to reaffirm the enduring values of peace, unity, and hope.
