The Holy See stressed that institutions tasked with establishing criminal responsibility must pursue truth while adhering to procedures that respect the inherent dignity and rights of the individual

Newsroom (10/10/2025, Gaudium Press ) The Holy See has issued a forceful appeal for the universal abolition of the death penalty, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to the inviolable dignity of every human person from conception to natural death. The statement came during the 2025 Warsaw Human Dimension Conference, hosted by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), in a plenary session dedicated to the rule of law.

Upholding the Sanctity of Human Dignity

Msgr. Lucas Marabese, Deputy Head of Mission of the Permanent Representative of the Holy See to the OSCE, delivered a compelling address emphasizing that human dignity, bestowed by God, remains immutable. He condemned all forms of mutilation, physical or psychological torment, and attempts to coerce the human will, aligning the Holy See’s stance with international human rights frameworks that categorically reject torture and inhumane treatment.

The Holy See stressed that institutions tasked with establishing criminal responsibility must pursue truth while adhering to procedures that respect the inherent dignity and rights of the individual. “Justice cannot compromise on the principles of humanity,” Msgr. Marabese asserted, calling for judicial processes that are both just and humane.

A Moral Stand Against Capital Punishment

In addressing capital punishment, the Holy See acknowledged its historical context but underscored a growing global consensus that it is fundamentally incompatible with human dignity. Msgr. Marabese highlighted advancements in penal systems that safeguard society without resorting to irreversible measures, noting that even those guilty of heinous crimes retain their God-given dignity and the potential for redemption.

“The death penalty is an affront to the sacredness and dignity of the human person,” Msgr. Marabese declared. “The Holy See will continue to advocate with resolve for its abolition worldwide.”

A Call to Action

The Holy See’s statement reflects its long-standing moral leadership in defending human rights and dignity. By renewing its call for the global elimination of the death penalty, it urges governments, institutions, and individuals to prioritize justice systems that uphold life and foster redemption over retribution. As the Warsaw conference continues, the Holy See’s message serves as a clarion call for a world that honors the sanctity of every human life.
