Worldwide youth and Church leaders gather online for the official launch of World Youth Day Seoul 2027, marking a new phase of global preparation and unity.
Newsroom (09/03/2026 Gaudium Press ) The journey toward World Youth Day Seoul 2027 officially began this month, as organizers and Church leaders convened online for a global “Kick-off Meeting for the Implementation Phase.” Hosted jointly by the World Youth Day Seoul Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and the Vatican’s Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, the March 5 meeting marked the start of the event’s intensive preparation stage.
According to a statement from the Seoul LOC, around 245 youth leaders and representatives from bishops’ conferences, ecclesial movements, and Catholic communities worldwide attended the meeting, moderated from the Dicastery’s conference room in Rome.
In his opening address, Archbishop Peter Soon-taick Chung of Seoul, president of the LOC, introduced four guiding themes encapsulating the vision for Seoul 2027: encounter, pastoral care, pilgrimage, and mission. He expressed hope that the next World Youth Day would serve as “a place where young people discover that they are not alone, encounter God and one another, and are sent back to their daily lives renewed in faith.”
Archbishop Chung also reflected on the spirit of the host city, describing Seoul as “a city where tradition and the future meet, where hospitality and community are lived, and where peace is deeply longed for.”
A Global Pilgrimage of Faith and Culture
The meeting featured presentations highlighting the Church in Korea, the pilgrimage of the World Youth Day symbols, and the pastoral and spiritual dimensions of the Seoul gathering. Organizers outlined key features that will distinguish the next edition, emphasizing the blending of Korean culture, language, and Seoul’s identity as a technologically advanced, globally connected metropolis.
Father Franco Galdino, youth coordinator at the Dicastery, underscored the shared nature of the World Youth Day journey, calling it “a shared journey in which the Church accompanies young people toward an encounter with Christ.”
Practical Roadmap and Pilgrim Experience
Beyond spiritual themes, the LOC revealed initial details of the event’s practical organization. Nine types of pilgrim participation packages will be offered, covering a range of accommodation and meal options. Organizers confirmed that contributions will see a 10 percent increase compared to previous editions, a move reflecting global inflation and local cost adjustments, while aiming to keep the pilgrimage experience accessible to participants from around the world.
Further details and registration information will be shared soon on the official World Youth Day Seoul 2027 website and through its social media channels.
Continuing a Global Tradition
First envisioned in 1985 by Pope John Paul II, World Youth Day (WYD) was conceived as a means to deepen young Catholics’ faith and celebrate the universality of the Church through encounter, prayer, and culture. The triennial gathering has since become one of the largest international events for youth, uniting millions across borders.
The most recent celebration, held in Lisbon in August 2023, drew over 300,000 registered participants from nearly 200 countries, with estimates suggesting up to 1.5 million attended the closing Mass presided over by Pope Francis.
Set for July 29 to August 8, 2027, World Youth Day Seoul 2027 aims to continue that legacy — this time in East Asia’s heart, where global Catholicism, youth energy, and Korean hospitality will converge in a celebration of faith and mission.
