Saint Blaise, a bishop and martyr in the year 316, is renowned for his powerful intercession. Originally a respected physician and devout Christian, he was elected by the people to serve as the bishop of Sebaste in Armenia, where he garnered great esteem.
However, guided by divine inspiration, he relinquished his episcopal duties to lead a solitary life on a mountain. There, he found companionship with wild animals, who visited him daily and received his blessings for healing. When pagans stumbled upon him in this unusual refuge, they were astonished to find him at peace among lions, tigers, wolves, and bears. Reported to the governor, Saint Blaise underwent fruitless interrogations before being arrested and subjected to torture.
Days later, he faced the court again. Despite being thrown into a lake to drown, he miraculously walked on water after making the sign of the cross, leaving the onlookers astounded.
Enraged, the governor ordered his beheading. Prior to his execution, Saint Blaise implored God’s mercy for his tormentors and those who would seek his intercession in the afterlife. In that moment, Jesus appeared to him, granting his request. Thus, the glorious martyr met his end.
Legend holds that during his imprisonment, Saint Blaise miraculously healed a boy who had nearly choked on a fish bone. He is especially invoked for relief from throat ailments.
Prayer to Saint Blaise:
“Saint Blaise, healer of a child with a pierced throat, we beseech you: alleviate our throat afflictions and heal those who suffer from them.
Yet, tend to our spirits as well! Guard us against spiritual indifference. Through your martyrdom, may we remain steadfastly devoted to Christ in faith, hope, and charity. Amen.”
