The ordinations confirm the springtime of vocations experienced by the Church in South Korea.

South Korea – Seoul (02/02/2022 9:00 AM Gaudium Press) On Friday, January 28, the Archbishop of Seoul, Most Rev. Peter Chung Soon-taick, presided over the ordination ceremony of 23 new Catholic priests. The solemn ceremony took place at Myeongdong Cathedral, and was attended by Cardinal Andrew Yeom, several auxiliary bishops, and Msgr. Fernando Reis, responsible for the Apostolic Nunciature’s Affairs in Korea, among others.

Sending missionaries to Latin America

The liturgy was broadcast live on the diocesan TV channel ‘Catholic Peace Broadcasting Corporation’ and including its YouTube channel. Archbishop Chung praised God for making these ordinations possible and thanked the parents of the new priests, the parish priests and religious sisters, teachers and spiritual guides. He also thanked the seminary staff and benefactors who have supported the ordinandi in their vocation to serve the Church.

Three of the new priests are members of the ‘Seoul International Catholic Missionary Society,’ a missionary society founded in 2005 by the Archdiocese of Seoul and committed to sending missionaries to Latin America. According to the Archbishop of Seoul, the Church in Korea “has moved from a ‘Church that welcomes’ to a ‘Church that gives’, ready for missionary work and therefore ready for the ‘Missio ad Gentes’. This is a sign that the Church in Korea has progressed.”

Vocation Spring in South Korea

“The local Church will work even harder to promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life: With confidence in God’s call to always give new workers to his vineyard as a gift, not only to the Church in Korea, but to the universal Church,” Bishop Peter Chung Soon-Taick concluded.

The new ordinations confirm the vocational springtime experienced by the Church in South Korea. Currently, the Archdiocese of Seoul has in its territory 966 priests, including one Cardinal, one Archbishop, three Bishops and five Monsignors. (EPC)
