Our Lady of Peñafrancia has been venerated in the city of Naga since the year 1710. On May 13, 1920, Pope Benedict XV granted the image a decree of canonical coronation.
Filipinas – Naga (12/09/2022 12:22, Gaudium Press) After a two-year break without celebrations due to restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, about half a million devotees packed the streets of Naga to participate in the procession of Our Lady of Peñafrancia and the Divine Face.
Traditional River Procession
The event, which began last Friday, September 9, marked the beginning of the novena in the Naga Cathedral, and follows the theme “Mary Accompanies Our Way Toward a Synodal Church”. The celebrations will culminate on September 17 with a traditional river procession presided over by Cardinal Jose Advincula.
In his homily, the Archbishop of Caceres, Archbishop Rolando Tria Tirona stressed the importance of the family communion of love with the inspiration of Mary, who exemplifies the attention, nourishment and genuine support to her Son.
Our Lady of Peñafrancia
Our Lady of Peñafrancia has been venerated in the city of Naga since the year 1710. On May 13, 1920, Pope Benedict XV granted the statue a decree of canonical coronation. The coronation rite was performed on September 24, 1924 with the apostolic delegate, Guillermo Piani.
Pope Benedict XV also declared Our Lady of Peñafrancia as the regional patroness of Bicolandia. The Solemn Feast of Our Lady of Penafrancia is celebrated on September 18 and the image is kept in the National Shrine and Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Peñafrancia. (EPC)
