Pope invoked God’s blessing on the pilgrims and entrusted the Croatian people to the protection of Mary, the Advocata fidelissima Croatiae
Newsroom (08/10/2025, Gaudium Press ) In a heartfelt address to approximately 10,000 Croatian pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the Jubilee Year, Pope Leo XIV praised their enduring Christian witness, rooted in a “received tradition” that continues to thrive. The pilgrims, hailing from across Croatia, were in Rome for a national pilgrimage marking the Holy Year. The Pope, having returned from Castel Gandolfo, spoke briefly before a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Dražen Kutleša of Zagreb, joined by several bishops and priests.
A Living Faith Through the Ages
“Praised be Jesus and Mary, Hvaljen Isus i Marija,” the Pope began, greeting the crowd in their native tongue. He described their presence as “a clear sign of the vitality of the faith” among Croatians, who have remained steadfast in their communion with the Church and loyalty to the Successor of St. Peter through centuries of challenges. This fidelity, he noted, is vividly expressed today through vibrant families, parish communities, and lay associations.
“The tradition received from your forebears is a precious treasure,” Pope Leo XIV said, emphasizing the importance of preserving and renewing this heritage. “You carefully preserve [it] and are called to renew [it] continually, always remaining open to recognising what the Holy Spirit inspires. I thank you sincerely for this fidelity, lived out in the concreteness of daily life.”
Transmitting Faith to New Generations
Highlighting the deep Christian roots of the Croatian people, the Pope acknowledged their global diaspora, driven by work, study, or other necessities. Despite being scattered, he urged them to keep their faith vibrant and anchored in Christ. “I urge you always to keep your gaze fixed on Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who guides and accompanies you, and to let yourselves be led by Him with trust and docility,” he said.
The Pope emphasized the importance of passing on faith to younger generations. “Do not forget that faith grows and is strengthened when it is shared,” he said. “For this reason, I invite you to transmit with joy to your children and the new generations the Christian values that have shaped your long history and your culture.”
A Call to Be Peacemakers
In a world marred by violence and conflict, Pope Leo XIV called on the Croatian pilgrims to be “a leaven of peace, goodness, and hope.” He acknowledged Croatia’s own historical experience with war, underscoring their unique capacity to foster reconciliation. “In this way, you will continue to be a leaven of peace… in a world torn by violence and wars—something you, too, know from your own history,” he said.
Concluding his address, the Pope invoked God’s blessing on the pilgrims and entrusted the Croatian people to the protection of Mary, the Advocata fidelissima Croatiae. “May she protect them and accompany them on their daily journey,” he prayed.
