Pope Leo XIV meets Aram I at the Vatican, emphasizing Christian unity, ecumenical dialogue, and concern for Lebanon and Middle East churches.

Newsroom (19/05/2026 Gaudium Press ) Pope Leo XIV welcomed His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia and a prominent leader in Eastern Christianity, to the Vatican Apostolic Palace on Monday, May 18. The meeting marked a significant moment in relations between the Catholic Church and the Armenian Apostolic tradition, underscoring shared commitments to unity and dialogue in a time of regional and global challenges.

Held within the historic halls of the Apostolic Palace, the audience focused on the enduring spiritual ties between the two Churches. Central to Pope Leo XIV’s reflections was the figure of Saint Paul, whom he described as the “apostle of communion,” embodying a model of unity that transcends divisions. The Pope also referenced other figures revered for their work in bridging Christian communities, including Saint Nerses, whom he praised as a “pioneer of ecumenism.”

Recognition of Aram I’s Ecumenical Leadership

During the meeting, Pope Leo XIV commended Aram I, 79, for his lifelong dedication to fostering dialogue among Christian communities. The Catholicos, widely recognized for his role in co-founding the Middle East Council of Churches, has long been a leading voice in ecumenical initiatives.

The Pope highlighted Aram I’s “tireless ecumenical zeal,” particularly noting his efforts to strengthen theological dialogue between traditions. Expressing gratitude for his closeness to the Church of Rome, Pope Leo XIV emphasized that continued engagement is essential, despite challenges faced in recent years.

“I sincerely hope that, despite recent difficulties, this dialogue will continue with renewed momentum,” the Pope stated, adding a firm reminder that “there can be no restoration of communion between our Churches without unity in faith.”

Lebanon and the Middle East at the Forefront

The discussion extended beyond theological concerns to the geopolitical and humanitarian realities facing the Middle East. Pope Leo XIV recalled his visit to Lebanon in December, describing the country as a place that has long demonstrated the possibility of coexistence among diverse religious and cultural communities, even amid hardship.

He expressed concern over Lebanon’s current instability, noting that its “unity and integrity” are once again under threat. In this context, the Pope underscored the responsibility of Christian communities not only to maintain internal unity but also to strengthen bonds with other religious groups.

“Our Churches are called to strengthen the fraternal bonds that unite not only Christians with one another, but also with their brothers and sisters of other communities in their common homeland,” he said.

The Pope concluded this portion of the meeting by conveying his “deep concern” for the people of Lebanon and for Christian communities across the Middle East, assuring Aram I of his prayers for peace and stability in the region.

A Shared Prayer for Unity and Peace

The encounter concluded on a spiritual note, with an ecumenical prayer service held in the Urban VIII Chapel of the Apostolic Palace. Together, the leaders prayed for the guidance of the Holy Spirit in achieving unity and enduring peace, reinforcing the meeting’s central themes of reconciliation and cooperation.

This audience marked the first official meeting between Pope Leo XIV and Aram I, setting the tone for future collaboration. The visit, however, extends beyond this initial exchange and includes a series of engagements aimed at deepening ties between institutions.

Broader Engagements and Continuing Dialogue

As part of his Vatican visit, Aram I is scheduled to participate in the Pope’s General Audience on Wednesday, May 20. He will also meet Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, and engage with several key Vatican dicasteries, including those responsible for Promoting Christian Unity, Interreligious Dialogue, and the Oriental Churches.

Additionally, the Catholicos will visit the Pontifical Armenian College, highlighting the historical and cultural connections between the Armenian Church and the wider Catholic world.

On May 19, Aram I is set to deliver a lecture at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome titled “The Challenges of the Churches in the Middle East.” The address is expected to provide further insight into the complex realities facing Christian communities in the region, from political instability to migration and interreligious relations.

A Renewed Commitment to Unity

The meeting between Pope Leo XIV and Aram I signals a renewed commitment to ecumenical dialogue at a critical juncture. By emphasizing shared heritage, mutual respect, and the urgency of cooperation, both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to overcoming divisions and addressing the challenges confronting their communities.

In an era marked by conflict and uncertainty, their exchange stands as a reminder of the enduring potential for unity—rooted in faith, sustained through dialogue, and expressed in collective action.
