Newsroom (08/05/2025 13:11, Gaudium Press) White smoke billowing from the Sistine Chapel’s chimney on the 8th May 2025 indicated that the College of Cardinals had chosen a new Pope.

Cardinal Dominique François Joseph Mamberti  who in July 2024 was designated as the cardinal to pronounce the “Habemus Papam!” [“We have a Pope!”), announced that Cardinal Prevost is the new pope and has taken the Papal Name Leo XIV.

This is the first time an Augustinian has become a Pope following Pope Francis who was the first Jesuit Pope.

The smoke, which was seen rising from the chimney at 6:09 p.m. local time, was accompanied by the ringing of bells at St. Peter’s to tell the world that two-thirds of the cardinals gathered in the conclave had come to an agreement in casting their ballots for the new Pope.

The pope was chosen after the 5th ballot which was cast on the second day of the conclave.

The voting began on the evening of May 7th 2025, yielding an initial inconclusive vote marked by black smoke.
