The European Day of Heritage, will see the Cathedral and its façade richly illuminated.

France – Bayonne (16/09/2021 6:45 PM, Gaudium Press) On the celebration of the European Day of Historical Heritage (September 18 and 19), the Cathedral of Bayonne, France, will showcase new lights highlighting the beauty of its facade. The project is a joint venture between the diocese, the city council and Archilumen, responsible for the lighting.

The artistic projections, which began last October 8, will run until October 10. Every day at nightfall, the Cathedral will have its façade and the western portico illuminated by sets of light resembling the Cathedral’s stained glass windows portraying the cycles of Creation and Redemption.

13th-century construction and World Heritage Site

The Cathedral of Saint Mary (or Bayonne Cathedral) is a 13th-century Gothic building. It is the episcopal seat of the diocese of Bayonne, located in southwestern France. Since 1998, the Cathedral and its adjoining cloister have been recognized as a World Heritage Site. The Cathedral also houses the urn with the relics of St. Leo, the 9th-century bishop of Bayonne.
