U.S. bishops will meet in Orlando in June 2026, with Archbishop Coakley’s debut address and a national consecration to the Sacred Heart.

Newsroom (20/05/2026 Gaudium Press ) The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is set to convene in Orlando, Florida, for its 2026 Spring Plenary Assembly from June 10–12, marking a meeting notable both for leadership transitions and a major act of national devotion. Archbishop Paul Coakley of Oklahoma City will deliver his first address as president of the conference, while bishops prepare to consecrate the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The gathering will also feature Archbishop Gabriele Giordano Caccia, the apostolic nuncio to the United States, who is scheduled to address the bishops for the first time since his appointment in March. These dual first addresses signal a moment of renewed leadership and spiritual focus for the American episcopate.

A National Consecration in a Jubilee Context

Central to the assembly is the planned consecration of the nation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a devotional act intended to deepen spiritual renewal among the faithful. In preparation, several bishops will offer reflections on the Sacred Heart ahead of the Mass where the consecration will take place.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts to commemorate the United States’ 250th anniversary. The USCCB has encouraged parishes and individuals to participate through “250 hours of adoration” and “250 works of mercy,” linking the milestone anniversary to acts of prayer and service. The bishops hope this initiative will foster both national unity and renewed commitment to Catholic spiritual practices.

Policy Decisions and Liturgical Revisions

While the full agenda remains subject to change, the assembly is expected to include deliberations and votes on several significant matters. Among them are the potential advancement of causes for canonization, including those of Msgr. Joseph Francis Buh and John Rick Miller.

The Committee on Divine Worship will present proposed elements of a revised edition of the Lectionary for Mass, along with the “2025 Roman Missal–Liturgy of the Hours Supplement.” These updates are part of ongoing efforts to refine and standardize liturgical texts, reflecting both pastoral needs and fidelity to Church traditions.

Another key item is a proposed revision to the “Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.” First taken up in 2022, the revisions aim to better align the charter with its original purpose: safeguarding minors, preventing abuse, and maintaining effective structures for responding to allegations. According to the USCCB, the updates are intended to strengthen accountability and ensure continued vigilance in addressing abuse within the Church.

Broader Church Initiatives and Long-Term Planning

Beyond immediate policy concerns, the bishops are also expected to discuss long-term spiritual and pastoral initiatives. One such effort is the Intercontinental Guadalupan Novena, a nine-year period of prayer initiated by Pope Francis in 2022. The novena leads up to 2031, marking the 500th anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The USCCB’s engagement with this initiative underscores its commitment to global Catholic devotions and cultural expressions of faith.

In addition, the assembly will include reflection on the 25th anniversary of the implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae in the United States. This apostolic constitution, issued by Pope John Paul II, sets forth theological and pastoral principles guiding Catholic colleges and universities. The expected presentation will revisit its impact and relevance in shaping Catholic higher education in the country.

Looking Ahead: Youth and Global Engagement

The bishops will also turn their attention to upcoming global events, including World Youth Day 2027, which is scheduled to be held in Seoul, South Korea. The discussion is expected to focus on preparation and participation, particularly in engaging young Catholics and strengthening their connection to the universal Church.

A Meeting of Transition and Renewal

The 2026 Spring Plenary Assembly reflects a convergence of leadership transition, liturgical development, and spiritual initiative. Archbishop Coakley’s inaugural address as USCCB president and Archbishop Caccia’s introduction to the body both come at a time when the Church in the United States continues to address internal challenges while seeking renewed engagement with the faithful.

Through initiatives such as the Sacred Heart consecration and the call to prayer and service tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary, the bishops appear focused on fostering a deeper spiritual identity. At the same time, ongoing revisions to liturgical texts and safeguarding policies indicate a continued emphasis on institutional clarity and accountability.

As the bishops gather in Orlando, the assembly is poised to shape both immediate actions and long-term priorities for the Catholic Church in the United States.
