She reproached him for his wrongdoing.

For this she was martyred.

Newsdesk (10/03/2025, Gaudium Press) Saint Eulalia of Mérida was very young, only 12 years old. It was around the year 300, during the terrible persecution of Christians by Diocletian because they refused to offer sacrifices to the pagan gods.

Filled with a pure heart, Eulalia said she did not fear martyrdom, that she even welcomed it, as it would be a means of joining Christ in Heaven. But her parents, who loved her dearly and knew her fearlessness, decided to lock her up in their castle where only a few people were allowed to see her, including a priest.

However, one day, the girl, who knew of the Roman governor’s cruelty towards Christians, left her parental confinement and, together with her nurse, sought out the governor to reproach him for his wrongdoing. This led to both Eulalia and her nurse Julia being martyred by the man.

The martyrdom was cruel: it was decreed that she be beaten with iron rods and that burning torches be placed on her wounds. Eulalia had thick hair, which caught fire. She died in this manner.

All these events are recounted by the Spanish poet Prudencio.

When Eulalia died, people witnessed a beautiful white dove emerge from the girl and fly up to the sky: a simple yet marvellous event that filled the executioners with dread and remorse, and caused them to flee.

It was winter, and pure white snow began to fall, covering her body, as if to symbolize her innocence. Some Christians collected her remains and a church was later built on that site in her honour, a shrine where her relics were kept and which was visited by many because of the numerous favours that were granted there.  As she had not feared to do, she had won the victory and had, indeed, joined Christ in Heaven.
