Cairo – Egypt (10/06/2024 18:00, Gaudium Press) Eight centuries after St. Francis of Assisi’s historic journey to Egypt, a relic of the Saint has temporarily returned to the country. A reliquary in the shape of a portrait of the Saint is on pilgrimage along the Nile, and inside is a fragment of his habit.

The Pilgrimage ended on June 2nd

The relic, which was lent by Franciscan monks from the Italian region of Tuscany, arrived in Cairo on May 23. From there, it traveled to Alexandria, visiting Minya, Assiut, Qena and Luxor. The relic returned to it’s home country on June 2.

800 years Since the Stigmata of St. Francis

The aim of this pilgrimage is to inspire the faithful in Egypt to follow in the footsteps of the Saint of Assisi and to bring back Franciscan spirituality. In addition, the event takes place as part of the celebrations for the 800th anniversary of the Stigmata of St. Francis.
