Historic beatification of Father Francis Truong Buu Diep in Vietnam united over 70,000 pilgrims, officials, and faith communities.

Newsroom (10/07/2026 Gaudium Press) The Beatification Mass of Father Francis Xavier Truong Buu Diep on July 2 marked a historic milestone for the Catholic Church in Vietnam, drawing more than 70,000 people to Tac Say and capturing the attention of believers and the wider public across the country. Presided over by Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization and Papal Envoy representing Pope Leo XIV, the ceremony became the first Beatification Mass ever celebrated on Vietnamese soil.

For Vietnamese Catholics, the event represented the fulfillment of a long-awaited moment. Among the pilgrims gathered at Tac Say was Nguyen Thi Kim Thoa, a 55-year-old visitor from Ho Chi Minh City who had made many pilgrimages to the site over the years. She described the beatification of Father Diep in his homeland as a source of great joy for Vietnamese Catholics and said it was the most meaningful pilgrimage she had ever experienced.

The significance of the ceremony extended beyond the Catholic community. Speaking after the Mass, Nguyen Ho Hai, Secretary of the Ca Mau Provincial Party Committee, described the celebration as a remarkable chapter in the history of the Catholic Church in Vietnam. He noted that the event was not only a moment of joy for Catholics throughout the country but also a source of pride for the people of Ca Mau Province. He emphasized that the occasion provided an opportunity to introduce the land and people of Ca Mau to visitors and audiences both inside and outside Vietnam.

The successful organization of the event received widespread praise from attendees, observers, and local authorities. Ho Thanh Thuy, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Ca Mau Province, stated during a review meeting that the Beatification Mass had been conducted successfully, solemnly, and safely, leaving a positive impression of both the province and its people.

Media coverage played an important role in bringing the celebration to a nationwide audience. Vietnamese state newspapers reported extensively on the event, portraying scenes of devotion and reverence that unfolded around the tomb of Father Francis Xavier Truong Buu Diep. Journalists described long lines of visitors coming to pray, take photographs, and leave flowers, family pictures, and prayer intentions. Reports also highlighted the atmosphere of worship as pilgrims sang hymns in honor of the new Blessed while offering prayers for peace and reflecting on the values of goodness and hope.

The extensive coverage helped make the beatification accessible to people who could not attend in person, contributing to a broader awareness of the celebration and its significance. The positive tone adopted by media outlets further underscored the unique nature of the event and the respect it inspired among people from different backgrounds.

One of the most remarkable features of the Beatification Mass was the diversity of those who participated. The crowd of more than 70,000 attendees included Catholics and non-Catholics, government representatives, members of other religions, local residents, and pilgrims from across Vietnam. Their presence transformed the occasion into something larger than a religious ceremony, creating a visible expression of unity that crossed cultural, social, and religious boundaries.

Bishop Peter Nguyen Tan Loi of Can Tho Diocese, which hosted the celebration, reflected on this aspect of the event by describing Father Diep as a figure who transcends religious divisions. According to the bishop, the immense number of people from different faith traditions who came together in respect for the priest represented a remarkable example of harmony and unity. He described this gathering of diverse communities as a miracle in itself.

The spirit of cooperation was evident throughout the day. Government officials, representatives of various faith communities, and countless volunteers worked together behind the scenes to ensure the smooth and successful organization of the Mass. Their efforts highlighted a shared commitment to service and demonstrated how a common purpose can bring people together despite differences in belief or background.

For many observers, the atmosphere at Tac Say carried a message that extended beyond the boundaries of religion. In a world often marked by conflict, division, and mistrust, the gathering offered a powerful example of people united by compassion and mutual respect. The event suggested that faith can serve not only as a spiritual force but also as a bridge between communities.

Many participants viewed this unity as part of the enduring legacy of Blessed Truong Buu Diep. Even after his death, he continues to be regarded by many as a symbol of compassion whose influence reaches beyond the Catholic faithful. The beatification celebration appeared to reinforce that perception, bringing together thousands of individuals who may differ in many ways but shared a common sense of reverence and goodwill.

As the celebrations concluded, Bishop Peter Nguyen Tan Loi expressed hope that Father Diep’s example of compassion and selflessness would continue to inspire public servants and community leaders in their responsibility to care for the well-being of the people. He also voiced his wish that Tac Say would remain a welcoming place for everyone, including those who are not Catholic, describing it as a peaceful common home where the spirit of Father Diep’s love and service could continue to touch hearts and guide people toward God.

The Beatification Mass of Blessed Francis Xavier Truong Buu Diep will likely be remembered as more than a milestone in Vietnamese Catholic history. It was a demonstration of faith, solidarity, and shared humanity, bringing together tens of thousands of people in a rare display of unity. For those who attended and the many more who followed from afar, the celebration offered a compelling reminder that compassion and respect remain powerful forces capable of drawing people together across every boundary.
