A canonical coronation is a recognition the Vatican offers to a Marian image serving as a beacon of faith and hope among the people in times of need.

The Philippines – Manila (04/02/2022 11:26 AM, Gaudium Press) Pope Francis has granted the canonical coronation of the image of Our Lady of the Assumption, kept in the cathedral of the Philippine Diocese of Maasin, where she is the patroness. This will be the first image to receive pontifical coronation in the diocese.

The approval occurred on December 14, 2021, four months after local Bishop Precioso Cantillas requested the Vatican. The decision, communicated by the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, has just been made public.

What is a canonical coronation?

A canonical coronation is a recognition offered by the Vatican to a Marian image under a specific title, fulfilling three conditions: the image must be ancient; recognized and acclaimed by the Faithful; serve as a beacon of faith and hope among the people in times of need.

The canonical coronation ceremony of the image of Our Lady of the Assumption is scheduled for early August this year.

Diocese of Maasin

In 1771, Maasin was canonically established as a parish under the care of Jesuit missionaries. In 1843, the Franciscan Order took charge, placing it under the protection of Our Lady of the Assumption. The Maasin diocese was erected in 1968 when the parish church received the rank of cathedral.
