Virgin Mary statue remains untouched after hospital fire in Enugu, Nigeria, inspiring faith, drawing visitors, and prompting calls for recovery support.

Newsroom (14/05/2026 Gaudium Press)  A fire that tore through sections of the Mother of Christ Specialist Hospital in Nigeria’s Catholic Diocese of Enugu on May 10 has left behind widespread destruction—but also a moment many are calling extraordinary. At the center of attention is a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary that remained completely untouched, even as flames consumed nearby materials.

According to the hospital’s administrator, Sr. Maria Chinaemerem Igwe of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Mother of Christ (IHM), the event has stirred renewed spiritual fervor among Catholics and drawn curious visitors from across denominations.

The Night the Fire Broke Out

The blaze began at approximately 10 p.m., when most hospital staff had already retired for the evening. Sr. Maria recounted arriving at the scene to find flames rising above the building’s roofline.

“Nurses, workers, and students had gathered, trying to pour water through the windows because the fire had already broken the glass,” she said.

Despite the efforts of those present, the fire spread quickly, consuming critical areas of the hospital. Among the hardest hit were the reception area, administrative offices, the CCTV control room, the doctors’ lounge, and part of the children’s ward. Firefighters from the Enugu State Fire Service eventually contained the blaze.

Extent of Damage and Suspected Cause

The damage was extensive. Office equipment, including 23 new HP desktop computers, printers, scanners, and vital documents, were reduced to ashes. Furniture, electronics, and appliances in the doctors’ lounge were also destroyed.

Sr. Maria attributed the likely cause of the fire to unstable electricity supply.

“The light was coming and going within seconds, and we suspected there was a surge that triggered the fire,” she explained.

Financial losses are significant. The destroyed equipment alone is valued at more than ₦25 million (approximately US$18,253), while repairs and reconstruction could cost up to ₦1 billion (around US$738,000).

An Untouched Statue Draws Attention

Amid this destruction, one detail has captured widespread attention: a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary located beside the administrator’s office remained entirely intact.

“The water dispenser beside the statue melted, and the CCTV wire dropped and got burnt in front of Mother Mary, but the statue remained intact—even the tablecloth and flowers around it were untouched,” Sr. Maria said.

She added that the fire appeared to have stopped short of entering the administrator’s office, where sensitive hospital records are stored.

“My office was just normal. No smell of smoke, no flame, nothing,” she recalled.

For Sr. Maria, the experience was overwhelming. “I started shouting, crying, and singing because I realized this was a great miracle,” she said.

Spiritual Impact and Public Response

The hospital has since become a focal point for prayer and reflection. Residents, patients, and visitors from different Christian backgrounds have continued to arrive, many having first learned of the incident on social media.

“Some came to confirm whether it was true,” Sr. Maria said.

The Marian statue is part of a long-standing devotional practice at the hospital, rotating among departments every three months for prayer. At the time of the fire, it was housed in the administrator’s department.

“This hospital is her house; anywhere the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary is, we believe she is present there,” Sr. Maria explained.

The incident, she says, has strengthened the faith of many and even sparked spiritual curiosity among non-Catholics.

“One lady from another denomination told me that Catholics have Mother Mary and that she is very powerful,” Sr. Maria recounted, noting that some visitors have begun praying at the site and expressing openness to Catholic beliefs.

A Renewed Sense of Faith

For many, the event has become more than just a story of survival—it is being interpreted as a sign of divine intercession. Sr. Maria noted a noticeable shift in the spiritual outlook of those who have visited.

“Their faith has increased. If it was 50 percent before, some people are now at 80 or 90 percent,” she said.

Encouraging deeper devotion, she added, “Those who did not believe in the intercession of Mary should know that she is still interceding for us. If you have true devotion to her, she will never allow you to be ashamed.”

No Lives Lost, But Recovery Needed

Despite the scale of the fire, there were no casualties—a fact Sr. Maria considers the greatest outcome.

“No amount of money is greater than human life,” she emphasized.

Still, the hospital, which has served the community for more than 70 years since its founding in 1957, now faces the challenge of rebuilding.

Appeal for Support

Sr. Maria has called on government agencies, non-governmental organizations, benefactors, and former patients to assist in the recovery effort.

“Mother of Christ Hospital has served people for more than 70 years. We are calling on everyone, especially those born in this hospital, to come and assist us. No amount is too small,” she appealed.

As rebuilding begins, the image of the untouched statue stands as both a symbol of resilience and a focal point of faith for many who continue to gather in its presence.
