Cardinal Frank Leo emphasizes hope, faith, and shared mission in Catholic schools during Catholic Education Week 2026 in Toronto.
Newsroom (05/05/2026 Gaudium Press ) Cardinal Frank Leo, Metropolitan Archbishop of Toronto, has called on Catholic school communities to renew their shared mission of faith, hope, and holiness as part of Catholic Education Week, observed May 3–8, 2026.
In a message addressed to the faithful, the Archbishop framed the annual observance as both a moment of gratitude and reflection, recognizing the collective efforts of students, educators, families, clergy, and parish communities. He described Catholic education as a “vibrant family” sustained by a broad network of contributors working together across the Archdiocese of Toronto.
At the heart of this year’s theme — “Catholic Education: Pilgrims of Hope: On the Path to Holiness” — is a vision that extends beyond academic instruction. Cardinal Leo emphasized that Catholic schools are not merely institutions of learning but communities engaged in a shared spiritual journey. He highlighted that the call to holiness applies to all formators in education, including teachers, parents, and clergy, positioning schools as environments of accompaniment where faith is lived and nurtured collectively.
He underscored the importance of hope as a guiding theological virtue in contemporary society, particularly amid uncertainty and pressure faced by many students, families, and educators. According to the Cardinal, Catholic schools respond to these challenges by affirming core spiritual truths: that individuals are loved by God, saved through Christ, and called to live lives of purpose and service. These principles, he noted, provide both resilience and a broader, eternal perspective.
Cardinal Leo also reiterated the foundational role of families as primary educators in the faith, alongside the contributions of teachers, staff, and parish communities. He described this collaboration between home, school, and parish as essential to fostering environments where both faith and learning can flourish.
While celebrating the strengths of Catholic education, the Archbishop cautioned against external influences that may distort Church teachings. He encouraged unity and fidelity to the Gospel, urging the community to remain grounded in authentic Catholic doctrine despite social pressures.
Concluding his message, Cardinal Leo invited all members of the Catholic education community to recommit to their shared mission. He expressed hope that schools would continue to serve as places where truth is sought, virtue is formed, and individuals are inspired to holiness. Entrusting this mission to the Blessed Mother, he offered prayers for continued guidance and blessing, describing Catholic schools as enduring “pilgrims of hope on the path to holiness.”
