Seoul archbishop urges parishes to lead WYD 2027 through prayer, service, and hospitality in a shared mission across the local Church.
Newsroom (20/04/2026 Gaudium Press ) Seoul’s Catholic parishes have been called to take center stage in preparations for World Youth Day (WYD) 2027, with Archbishop Peter Chung Soon-taick urging local communities to move beyond logistical roles and embrace a deeper spiritual mission.
Speaking during a homily at Myeongdong Cathedral on April 19, Archbishop Chung emphasized that parish communities must become “true protagonists” in the journey toward the global Catholic gathering, which is scheduled to take place from July 29 to Aug. 8, 2027, and is expected to be attended by Pope Leo XIV.
The archbishop’s remarks came during an inaugural Holy Mass organized by the WYD 2027 Local Organizing Committee (LOC), marking the official launch of Parish Organizing Committees (POCs) across the Seoul Archdiocese. The event signaled the beginning of parish-level engagement in the years leading up to the international youth gathering.
Chung underscored that participation in WYD is not limited to a select group but extends to every member of the Church. “Some will take part through prayer, others through support, others through service, and still others by opening their homes,” he said, calling on the faithful to respond with courage to their individual vocations.
Beyond Logistics: A Shared Church Mission
While the newly formed POCs are tasked with practical responsibilities—such as coordinating homestay programs and arranging accommodations, including the use of school facilities within parish boundaries—the archdiocese made clear that their purpose goes far beyond organizational duties.
According to the Seoul Archdiocese, the parish-level committees are expected to renew local communities through prayer, make the presence of WYD visible within parish life, and foster a deeper understanding that the event is a “shared mission of the whole local Church.”
The launch of the POCs reflects a broader commitment by the archdiocese to “move forward together with its parishes on the road to World Youth Day,” emphasizing unity between clergy and laity in both spiritual and material preparation.
A Call to Prayer, Service, and Hospitality
Archbishop Chung highlighted three key areas of participation for parishes: prayer, financial support, and hospitality. He encouraged families to open their homes to pilgrims, describing such acts of welcome as opportunities for “a grace-filled experience of faith and communion.”
He also expressed gratitude to parish priests for their voluntary financial contributions and urged all members of the faithful to support WYD preparations in similar ways.
In addition, the archbishop called on parishes to intensify their involvement in the One Billion Rosaries Prayer Campaign, an initiative launched by the archdiocese as part of the spiritual preparation for the global event.
Symbolism and Commitment
The inaugural gathering drew around 1,000 participants, including Bishop Paul Kyung-sang Lee, General Coordinator of WYD 2027, as well as deans, parish priests, lay leaders, and youth representatives from across the archdiocese.
During the ceremony, representatives of parish pastoral councils and youth formally pledged their commitment to WYD preparations at the local level. Appointment certificates, badges, and parish manuals were also distributed to support their roles.
In a symbolic gesture, Archbishop Chung blessed and presented nearly 300 wooden sculptures bearing the WYD Seoul 2027 logo, each inscribed with the name of a parish. These will be installed in local churches as visible signs of unity, prayer, and shared mission.
A Moment of Grace, Not Just an Event
In his closing remarks, Archbishop Chung cautioned against viewing WYD as merely a large-scale event. Instead, he framed it as a spiritual opportunity of global significance.
“WYD is not simply an event or a mega-event,” he said. “It must become a time of grace in which God is encountered in the young people of the world.”
With the groundwork now laid at the parish level, the Seoul Archdiocese is positioning its local communities not just as hosts, but as active participants in shaping the spiritual impact of World Youth Day 2027.
