THE WORK CONSISTS OF TWO VOLUMES: THE FIRST CONTAINS 46 WAYS OF CELEBRATING MASS ACCORDING TO THE LITURGICAL YEAR; THE SECOND CONTAINS THE READINGS ASSIGNED TO EACH MASS.

Newsroom (01/04/2025 18:22, Gaudium Press) The Mexican Episcopal Conference, through the Episcopal Commission for Liturgical Pastoral, chaired by Bishop Víctor Sánchez Espinosa, presented the books ‘Masses of the Virgin Mary’, which are a compilation of liturgical texts for the celebration of Holy Masses in honor of the Mother of God.

Publication includes votive Masses of Our Lady of Guadalupe

According to Bishop Espinosa, although this collection of Masses was approved by Pope John Paul II and promulgated by the then Congregation for Divine Worship on August 15, 1986, only now has a version been published for Mexico. The work consists of two volumes: the first contains 46 ways of celebrating Mass, following the order of the times that make up the liturgical year; the second contains the readings assigned to each Mass.

According to Father Jonathan Arellano Verdejo, executive secretary of the Episcopal Commission for Liturgical Pastoral Care, this edition includes the votive Masses of Our Lady of Guadalupe and in the future Masses dedicated to local Marian devotions, such as Our Lady of Zapopan and Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos, could be included.

Doctrinal richness that Mariology has achieved

The initiative came about because the Marian celebrations present in the Roman Catholic Missal “are numerically insufficient and do not sufficiently reflect the doctrinal richness that Mariology has achieved”. As a way of avoiding promoting a devotionalism that would keep the cult of Our Lady separate from the celebration, it was decided that each form should begin with a Christological introduction.

The Mexican Bishops hope that this work will have a special presence in the Marian Shrines of Mexico, where Holy Masses are frequently celebrated in honor of Our Lady, as well as in various ecclesial communities that wish to commemorate her on the Saturdays of Ordinary Time. (EPC)
