Dom Roberto José da Silva denounces the desecration and theft of the tabernacle in Jaíba, calls for prayer and reparation, and confirms recovery of sacred items and detention of suspects.

Newsroom (29/04/2026 Gaudium Press ) The bishop of Janaúba, Dom Roberto José da Silva, has issued a strong condemnation following the desecration and theft of the tabernacle containing consecrated hosts from the parish of Nossa Senhora da Glória in Jaíba, Minas Gerais Brazil. The incident occurred on April 26, Good Shepherd Sunday, prompting what the bishop described as “deepest sorrow and vehement repudiation” of a “serious and regrettable act.”

In an official statement, Bishop Roberto José emphasized that the incident goes beyond material damage. He described it as “an extremely serious offense against the Catholic faith,” striking at what he called the central mystery of belief: “the real, living and substantial presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Blessed Eucharist.”

Calling the faithful to respond spiritually, the bishop urged Catholics not only to mourn the incident but to turn to prayer. “We are called, as a Church, not only to lament, but to lift our hearts to God in a spirit of reparation and trust,” he said. He invited members of the diocese to unite with the affected parish and its priests in prayers of reparation, describing such acts as expressions of “love, adoration, and reparation to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.”

Bishop Roberto José also highlighted the broader spiritual significance of the moment, encouraging renewed devotion. He said the incident should lead to “a renewed awareness of the inestimable value of the Eucharist, the source and summit of Christian life,” and called on the faithful to offer sincere prayers in response to “offenses, sacrileges, and indifference committed against the Blessed Sacrament.”

Despite the gravity of the incident, the bishop confirmed that authorities have made progress in the case. According to his statement, “the tabernacle, the ciboria, and the hosts” have been recovered, and those responsible “have been identified and detained by the competent authorities.”

Concluding his message, the bishop expressed hope that the episode would ultimately bear spiritual fruit. He urged the faithful to remain united in prayer, trusting that God “rich in mercy” can transform “this episode of sorrow into an occasion of grace and conversion.”
