In a heartfelt address to the priests, deacons, and seminarians of the Diocese of Rome, the Holy Father emphasized the importance of unity, exemplarity, and a prophetic response to contemporary challenges.

Newsroom, June 12, 2025, Gaudium Press –Speaking in the Audience Hall on Thursday, the Pope expressed gratitude for the clergy’s dedication and highlighted their critical role in serving both the local and universal Church.

The Pope began by acknowledging the unique nature of the Diocese of Rome, which “presides in charity and communion” due to its global significance and diverse clerical community. He praised the priests and deacons for their daily labors, often marked by silent sacrifices, and recognized the international composition of Rome’s clergy, many of whom come to the city for studies. This diversity, he noted, enriches pastoral care, particularly in parishes, fostering a spirit of universality and mutual acceptance.

Call for Unity and Communion

Central to the Pope’s message was the theme of unity, rooted in Jesus’ prayer “that his people may be one” (John 17:20-23). He urged the clergy to nurture presbyteral communion, which is facilitated by the tradition of living together in rectories and colleges. However, he warned against cultural tendencies toward isolation and self-absorption, which threaten spiritual life and ministry. The Pope also acknowledged internal challenges, such as feelings of weariness or misunderstanding, which can strain fraternity. He called for a renewed zeal in priestly relationships, grounded in a robust spiritual life and mutual respect, encouraging clergy to “outdo one another in respect” (Romans 12:10).

Exemplarity in Ministry

The Pope stressed the importance of leading by example, referencing Saint Paul’s words to the elders of Ephesus: “You yourselves know how I lived among you” (Acts 20:18). He urged the clergy to embody transparency and fidelity in their ministry, acknowledging human limitations but emphasizing the grace entrusted to them. The Pope cautioned against the distractions of modern life in Rome, which could dilute the profound values of priesthood. He invited the clergy to reconnect with the initial passion that inspired their vocation, fostering a humble and holy life that reflects the Gospel’s transformative power.

Prophetic Response to Modern Challenges

Addressing the challenges of the present era, the Pope highlighted global and local issues, including violence, inequality, poverty, and social marginalization. He noted that Rome itself faces significant challenges, such as housing crises and the need for “simple decorum” in daily life, echoing remarks by Pope Francis during a 2023 Vespers homily. The Pope encouraged the clergy to view these challenges as opportunities to build God’s Kingdom, drawing inspiration from figures like Don Primo Mazzolari, Don Lorenzo Milani, and Don Luigi Di Liegro, who combined pastoral zeal with social justice advocacy. He called for a prophetic perspective, urging the clergy to engage with today’s complexities through evangelically inspired action.

A Message of Closeness

Concluding his address, the Pope assured the clergy of his personal support and commitment to walk with them. He invoked Saint Augustine’s call to “love this Church” and pray for unity, emphasizing the vision of “One Flock and One Shepherd.” The address was met with warm applause, reflecting the clergy’s appreciation for the Pope’s encouragement and guidance.
