The Pontifical Academy for Life urges scientists worldwide to take concrete actions promoting peace and ethical research across disciplines.

Newsroom (12/03/2026 Gaudium Press ) As wars and conflicts continue to plague numerous regions, the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life has made a powerful call to the world’s scientific and academic communities. On Wednesday, March 11, the Academy launched an international appeal titled “Scientists for Peace”, urging researchers from every discipline to take tangible steps toward fostering peace, reconciliation, and ethical scientific practice.

The initiative comes at a moment when, as the Academy warns, the “language of weapons and war” has gained tragic global significance—undermining not only human lives but also the freedom and integrity of scientific inquiry.

“At this particular moment in history… scientists and academics around the world are called upon to take a stand for peace and to engage in the search for ways of reconciliation and conflict resolution, starting from the daily practice of their research,” the statement declared.

A call across borders and disciplines

Promoted by the Pontifical Academy for Life and sponsored by the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, this international appeal is open to scientists, researchers, and academics from every field. Importantly, it welcomes participation regardless of nationality, ideology, or faith—reflecting a vision of science as a bridge that transcends cultural, political, and religious divides.

The Academy’s central message emphasizes that research must serve humanity, not hinder it. By promoting dialogue and collaborative projects, the initiative urges scientists to commit to research that brings together people of different backgrounds and to remain vigilant against the misuse of science—especially in military or destructive applications.

Science as a force for peace

The Pontifical Academy for Life situates this appeal within its broader mission: the promotion and defense of human life through ethical, interdisciplinary research. It invites the global academic community to see research not merely as a pursuit of knowledge but as a tool for peacebuilding, reconciliation, and responsible innovation.

“Guided by the pursuit of truth, scientific research is based on rigorous methodologies and grows through the sharing of knowledge and a willingness to continually question itself,” the statement notes, underscoring the moral dimension of intellectual inquiry.

The Academy further called on the scientific community to foster a culture of transparent communication and honest competition, urging researchers to “overcome personal interests” in order to contribute to the shared heritage of global knowledge.

A pledge for humanity’s future

The “Scientists for Peace” appeal represents both a moral and practical invitation: to harness the power of scientific thought not for division or domination, but for understanding and unity. In the Vatican’s view, the laboratory and the lecture hall can become spaces where the seeds of peace are cultivated daily—through ethical collaboration, integrity, and a shared vision of human dignity.

Anyone wishing to support or join the initiative can sign the appeal through the Pontifical Academy for Life’s official website.
