Number of Catholics Decreases in Spain

Recent surveys show that the number of those who declare themselves Catholic has decreased over the years.

Newsroom (September 4, 2021, 9:55 PM, Gaudium Press) The Center for Sociological Research of Spain has published troubling data about Catholicism in the country. According to the report, out of every ten people interviewed, four declared to be atheists, the highest percentage registered until now.

The number of those who consider themselves practicing Catholics has also decreased. Only 16.7% go to Mass and go to confession frequently. The age group between 18 and 34 years presents the most alarming data. Only 30% consider themselves Catholic.

43 years ago, in 1978, CIS reported the number of Catholics for the first time, which was 90.5%. Since then, the number has been decreasing year by year. (FM)
