Holy Land bishops condemn crucifix desecration by Israeli soldier in Lebanon, demand accountability and call for peace amid escalating conflict.
Newsroom (22/04/2026 Gaudium Press ) The Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land has issued a forceful condemnation following the circulation of images showing an Israeli soldier desecrating an image of the crucified Christ in southern Lebanon, calling the act a “grave affront to the Christian faith” and demanding immediate accountability.
The statement, signed April 20 in Jerusalem, comes after footage emerged from the Lebanese town of Debel showing a soldier striking a crucifix. The Israeli army has confirmed the incident and launched an internal investigation, while the episode has triggered widespread international reaction.
Church leaders expressed “deep indignation” over what they described as a disturbing act that is not isolated, but part of a broader pattern of reported incidents involving Christian symbols during ongoing military operations in southern Lebanon.
A Pattern of Incidents
According to the Assembly, the desecration adds to a series of similar cases reported in the region amid escalating conflict. The bishops warned that such actions point to “a worrying deficiency in moral and human formation,” where respect for sacred symbols and human dignity has been “seriously compromised.”
The images of the incident prompted a rare public response from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who condemned the act and pledged disciplinary measures against the soldier involved.
Calls for Accountability
In their statement, the Catholic Ordinaries called for “immediate and decisive disciplinary measures” and the establishment of a credible accountability process. They also demanded clear guarantees that such conduct will not recur, emphasizing that respect for religious symbols constitutes a minimum standard even in times of war.
Despite the severity of the incident, the bishops underscored that the symbolic power of the Cross remains intact. Citing Saint Paul — “May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” — they reaffirmed that, for Christians, the Cross continues to represent dignity, hope, and redemption.
A Broader Appeal for Peace
The condemnation comes against the backdrop of ongoing hostilities in southern Lebanon, where recent weeks of military operations have resulted in thousands of casualties and extensive destruction.
In this context, the Assembly renewed its urgent call to end the war and pursue dialogue. Echoing recent remarks by Pope Leo XIV, the bishops advocated for an “unarmed” peace rooted in responsibility, respect for the sacred, and the dignity of all human life.
“True peace cannot be born of violence,” the statement said, urging a path forward defined by moderation and mutual respect.
The declaration was signed by Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and President of the Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land.
