The Vatican (Wednesday, April 18, 2018, Gaudium Press) Pope Francis received Tom Evans, father of seriously ill child Alfie Evans, at his Santa Marta residence before his weekly general audience on Wednesday morning.
Evans said that he had travelled to Rome the previous evening to attend the audience, at which Pope Francis once again mentioned his son, and the case of Vincent Lambert.
“I would like to draw your attention again to Vincent Lambert and little Alfie Evans,” the Pope said. “I would like to reiterate and strongly confirm that the only master over life, from beginning to natural end, is God! And our duty, our duty is to do everything to preserve life.”
Tom Evans thanks the Pope for agreeing to meet him, and asked him to grant “asylum” to Alfie because British hospitals “do not want to give disabled children the chance of life and instead assisting in the death of children.”
“If your holiness helps our child you will be potentially saving the future for our children in the UK, especially the disabled,” he said.
“We pray the problem we are facing is solved peacefully and respectfully no child deserves this, especially not a child of God.”
The Pope said the Vatican’s Secretariat of State would ensure a “decisive diplomatic channel is opened up for Alfie” so that “the dignity of his life is respected”.
According to various reports, the meeting lasted 20 minutes and was set up with the help of an Italian bishop.
In a post on Facebook after the meeting, Evans wrote:
“No sleep! No food! No tie! No care!!!
“Last night I jumped on a plane and come to Vatican Rome to meet the pope 1 hour ago and here we are.
