A Vatican study day on April 28, 2026, will explore the link between marriage, faith, and priestly formation, highlighting the Church’s mission to support families and young people.
Newsroom (27/04/2026 Gaudium Press) The Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life will convene a high-level study day on April 28, 2026, at the Casina Pio IV, placing renewed focus on the relationship between the sacrament of marriage, faith, and the Church’s teaching mission, or munus docendi.
The gathering will bring together approximately 75 invited participants, including representatives from various dicasteries of the Roman Curia, seminary rectors, lecturers, and those involved in the formation of future priests. The initiative reflects what the Dicastery describes as a growing awareness that the intersection of marriage, faith, and ecclesial mission has become a pressing pastoral and educational concern.
Opening the event at 8:30 a.m., Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Prefect of the Dicastery, will set the tone for the discussions. He will be followed by contributions from Fr. Andrea Bozzolo, Rector of the Pontifical Salesian University, and Fr. Fabio Rosini, a biblical scholar and professor at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross. The formal sessions will conclude at 1:30 p.m., followed by a period of dialogue.
Organizers emphasize that the study day is designed not only to reflect on how the Church accompanies young people, engaged couples, and married couples, but also to address how ministers and pastoral workers are trained to carry out this mission effectively. In a rapidly evolving cultural landscape, the Dicastery notes the need for a more grounded and practical formation—one that engages directly with the lived experiences of families and the emotional realities facing younger generations.
Particular attention will be given to priestly formation. According to the Dicastery, the theology and pastoral care of marriage cannot be treated as a secondary concern. Instead, it raises fundamental questions about how future priests are prepared to understand, proclaim, and support the vocation of marriage in its human, spiritual, and pastoral dimensions.
“In many church contexts, there is a perceived need for formation that is less abstract,” the Dicastery states, pointing to the importance of equipping clergy to address real-life family dynamics and contemporary questions surrounding relationships and emotional life.
The event also forms part of the tenth anniversary commemorations of Amoris laetitia, Pope Francis’ 2016 Apostolic Exhortation on the family. In a message dated March 19, 2026, Pope Leo XIV reaffirmed the document’s central insight: that spouses, through the sacrament of marriage, become a “domestic Church” and play a vital role in transmitting the faith.
He also called for renewed commitment to supporting married couples and helping young people rediscover the depth of the marital vocation, urging the Church to strengthen its pastoral and educational efforts in this area.
Within this broader context, the study day seeks to underscore a conviction gaining traction within the Church: that the vocation to marriage is integral—not peripheral—to the formation of future pastors.
Ultimately, organizers argue that the vitality of evangelization, the growth of faith, and the Church’s ability to guide younger generations are closely tied to the strength of family and emotional life.
