Pope Leo XIV urges unity, hope, and renewal during a Marian devotion at Madrid’s Almudena Cathedral, calling believers to “tear down walls.”
Newsroom (09/06/2026 Gaudium Press ) On June 8, 2026, in the Cathedral of Holy Mary of Almudena in Madrid, Pope Leo XIV delivered a solemn address centered on devotion, renewal, and the enduring significance of Marian faith. The occasion, marked by prayer and reverence, gathered the faithful in honor of Our Lady of Almudena, revered as Mother and Patroness of the Archdiocese of Madrid.
Opening his remarks with gratitude to the Archbishop of Madrid, the Pope extended a warm greeting to the congregation, acknowledging their “joy and fervor” in participating in the act of devotion. As a symbolic gesture of papal affection toward the Virgin Mary, he announced that he would place a golden rose at her feet—an ancient expression of homage and reverence.
A Millennia-Old Devotion
Pope Leo XIV reflected on the deep historical roots of devotion to Our Lady of Almudena, noting how generations of Madrileños have venerated the sacred image depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary holding and presenting the Christ Child. This longstanding tradition, he emphasized, is intrinsic to the Christian identity of the region.
He recalled the traditional account surrounding the statue’s preservation: during times of adversity, the image was hidden within a niche in the wall of the city’s citadel to protect it. It remained concealed until a partial collapse of the structure led to its miraculous rediscovery, intact.
For the Pope, this story is rich with meaning. It represents not only divine providence but also a message for contemporary society—one of resilience, rediscovery, and the re-establishment of spiritual connection.
From Collapse to Renewal
Drawing on the imagery of the fallen wall, Pope Leo XIV offered a deeper reflection on its symbolic significance. While acknowledging that the collapse of a wall often brings disruption and chaos, he highlighted its transformative potential.
“When a wall collapses,” he explained, “it opens up spaces, restores possibilities and fosters renewal.” This dual meaning, he suggested, is particularly relevant in modern societies, where many “walls” exist not as protective barriers but as divisive structures that isolate and separate individuals and communities.
He observed that people often prefer to maintain or ignore such divisions rather than confront the discomfort of dismantling them. Yet, according to the Pope, authentic renewal requires precisely this courage.
Breaking Barriers for a New Horizon
Invoking the presence and protection of Our Lady of Almudena, the Pope issued a clear invitation: to build a “new, beautiful and lasting” future, believers must be willing to tear down these figurative walls. Only by doing so can space be created to move forward and rediscover a broader horizon.
This call to action was not limited to social or structural change but extended to the spiritual life of the faithful. Pope Leo XIV emphasized that the journey forward must be guided by a deep awareness of God’s presence among His people—a presence that listens to fears and embraces human efforts toward goodness.
A Threefold Witness: Faith, Charity, Hope
Central to the Pope’s message was an exhortation to persevere in three essential dimensions of Christian life: faith, charity, and hope.
He encouraged the faithful to remain steadfast in their witness of faith, allowing them to perceive “the Father’s plan of love.” Equally, he stressed the importance of charity in fostering unity, calling believers to come together “as one family of brothers and sisters.” Finally, he highlighted hope as the sustaining force that enables continued engagement in the world.
Through these virtues, he suggested, the faithful can contribute to healing divisions and restoring harmony within society and the Church.
Mary as a Model of Communion and Love
Pope Leo XIV presented Our Lady of Almudena, identified as the Virgin of the Magnificat, as a model of devotion and proclamation. Her example—magnifying the greatness of the Lord and rejoicing in God her Savior—serves as a guide for believers seeking to deepen their relationship with Christ.
He emphasized that through her intercession, the faithful are strengthened in their love for both Jesus and the Church. This spiritual support, he noted, is essential for rebuilding “the universal language of communion, fraternal love and harmony.”
A Prayer for Peace and Reconciliation
Concluding his address, the Pope offered a prayer inspired by a traditional hymn dedicated to Our Lady of Almudena. In it, he entrusted the faithful to her maternal care, invoking her protection and guidance.
The prayer calls on Mary as “Virgin and Mother of the Redeemer” and “Queen of Heaven,” asking her to shelter her children under her mantle. It culminates in a heartfelt plea: that believers may become “builders of peace and reconciliation.”
A Message for the Present Moment
In his address, Pope Leo XIV wove together history, symbolism, and spiritual exhortation to deliver a message both timely and timeless. By reflecting on the rediscovery of a hidden statue through the collapse of a wall, he offered a powerful metaphor for contemporary challenges.
His call to dismantle division, embrace renewal, and strengthen faith underscores a vision of unity grounded in devotion and love—a vision he commended to the faithful under the watchful care of Our Lady of Almudena.
