History of the devotion
According to historical chronicles, the worship and devotion of the people of Otuzco to the Virgin of La Puerta originated in the seventeenth century amid fears of a pirate attack on the city of Trujillo, with concerns that nearby villages, including Otuzco, could also be targeted in any inland incursion.
At that time, Otuzco had a chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, who was the town’s patroness. When news spread that pirates had sacked the northern cities of Guayaquil and Zaña, and with growing belief that Trujillo would be next, authorities in Trujillo sent warnings to surrounding villages to take precautions.
In response, the residents of Otuzco placed an image of the Virgin of the Conception at the village entrance as a symbol of prayer and divine protection against the threat. Miraculously, Trujillo escaped attack, and from that moment, deep faith and veneration for the Virgin of La Puerta emerged, spreading across northern Peru.
The patronal feast traces its origins to 1664, when the image was positioned at the town’s gate as a safeguard against the potential pirate raid. The main celebration takes place annually on December 15, and in 2012, the feast of Our Lady of the Gate was officially declared National Cultural Heritage by the Peruvian government. In the days leading up to this central date, hundreds of devoted pilgrims undertake a challenging 73-kilometer journey on foot from Trujillo to the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Puerta in Otuzco.
