He mentioned that these challenges represent an opportunity to reflect on the fundamental values that sustain Peruvian society”.
These statements come in a difficult political context, marked by the intervention of the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the police raid on the residence of the incumbent president.
“As archbishop of Trujillo and president of the Peruvian Bishops’ Conference, I urge the organs of state, as well as the forces of justice and the courts, to establish bridges of collaboration, sincere dialogue, and coordinated and articulated work between the different levels of government; to seek a balance and understanding between the powers in favor of strengthening our democracy, governability and the political and social stability of our country.”
The president of the Episcopal Conference of Peru stressed that only with truth and justice will it be possible to strengthen democracy and unite Peru more and more, with a view to the well-being of all.
In the communiqué, he highlighted the joy of the Resurrection, which contrasts with the worrying situations affecting Peru, which does not seem to find paths of light and hope.
In view of the recent developments related to the tax investigations and judicial decisions that have generated commotion in the country, an opportunity arises to reflect seriously on the fundamental values that sustain our society and that enlighten us to find the true path in the search for truth.
The first is Peru, he said, and asked the Peruvian population, because of their responsibility and co-responsibility, to seek solutions to conflicts “without passion, with adherence to legality, respect for people, due process and constitutional guarantees”.
Search of the president’s official residence
Last Friday, a group of prosecutors and agents from the National Police searched both the residence of Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and the Government Palace, as part of a preliminary investigation into alleged illicit enrichment. There are suspicions that Boluarte failed to declare a collection of luxury watches.
The police action began in the early hours of Friday morning, when officers broke the lock on the front door of Boluarte’s residence in Lima de Surquillo, after knocking repeatedly without any response. According to a police document obtained by AFP, around 40 agents and magistrates went to the residence, which was surrounded, to carry out the search and seize the Rolex watches.
The president was not at home at the time, but one of her children was present, according to local media reports. Later, one of the president’s lawyers came to the scene.
Boluarte is confident that the government’s allies in Congress will not support her impeachment.
