The Archbishop of Toledo celebrates 25 years of the Heralds of the Gospel, highlighting their devotion to the Eucharist, Marian spirituality, and unity with the Pope.

Newsroom (27/04/2026 Gaudiumpress) – The Archdiocese of Toledo marked a significant milestone this year as it celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Pontifical Approval of the Heralds of the Gospel. To commemorate the occasion, Archbishop Francisco Cerro Chaves presided over a solemn Mass of Thanksgiving on Friday, the 17th, in the chapel of the Heralds’ residence in Camarenilla.

Joining the Primate Archbishop in concelebration were Bishop Emeritus Ángel Rubio Castro of Segovia, Pro-Vicar General Raúl Muelas, the territorial vicars of La Sagra and Talavera, the Episcopal Vicar for the Laity, the Rector of the Major Seminary, the Director of the Secretariat of the Episcopal Commission for the Laity, four cathedral canons, several parish priests, and the superior of the Heralds’ local community.

The celebration also drew participation from numerous members of the faithful, including lay Heralds, diocesan officials, and representatives of Catholic organizations. Among them were the Diocesan Bursar, the Episcopal Delegate for the Lay Apostolate of Toledo, a former Secretary General of Manos Unidas, and the Vice President of the Forum of the Laity of Spain.

A Jubilee of Gratitude and Mission

In his homily, Archbishop Cerro Chaves warmly congratulated the Heralds of the Gospel on reaching this silver jubilee of their pontifical recognition, granted on February 22 by Pope John Paul II. He highlighted that this approval affirmed the charism of their founder, Msgr. João Clá Dias, and recognized the movement’s growing contribution to the life of the Church.

The Archbishop expressed his deep appreciation for the Heralds’ presence in the Archdiocese of Toledo, describing them as “very beloved” and praising their commitment to evangelization.

Three Pillars of the Heralds’ Charism

Reflecting on the identity of the Heralds of the Gospel, Archbishop Cerro Chaves emphasized three central elements that define their spiritual life and mission: devotion to the Eucharist, love for the Virgin Mary, and fidelity to the Pope.

He described their profound Eucharistic devotion as the heart of their vocation—expressed through the celebration, reception, and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. “The Eucharist is the bread of life,” he noted, “the miracle in which Christ gives Himself entirely for the salvation of all.”

Equally central, he said, is their filial love for the Blessed Virgin Mary, particularly under the title of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and in connection with the Message of Fatima. This Marian devotion, he explained, fosters a spirit of tenderness, unity, and spiritual family within their communities.

Finally, the Archbishop underscored the importance of communion with the Pope, describing it as essential to the life of the Church. “Nothing without Peter,” he said, affirming the Heralds’ steadfast unity with the Holy Father as a defining mark of their identity.

I would say that the passion of a Herald is their deep passion for the Eucharist, their deep passion for Mary, the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Fatima, and their deep passion for communion with Peter. “Papal” communion, we could say, with the Church. These three keys characterize the Heralds.

A Living Witness in Challenging Times

Archbishop Cerro Chaves also acknowledged that the Heralds’ journey has not been without challenges. Yet, he noted, their charism has been strengthened through trials and continues to bear fruit. He pointed to recent ordinations in Brazil—30 deacons and 26 priests—as a sign of vitality and hope.

Drawing on the Message of Fatima, he highlighted the Heralds’ call to conversion, simplicity, and renewed fidelity to the Gospel. In a world often marked by uncertainty, he said, their mission serves as a reminder of the enduring power of faith, charity, and trust.

A Grateful Church

Concluding his homily, the Archbishop expressed the gratitude of the Archdiocese for the Heralds’ apostolic work, particularly in rural and missionary settings. He entrusted their future to divine providence, asking for continued blessings upon their mission.

As the Heralds of the Gospel celebrate 25 years since their pontifical approval, their presence in Toledo stands as a sign of ongoing dedication to evangelization—rooted in the Eucharist, nourished by Marian devotion, and united in faithful communion with the Church.
