Saint Pantaleon, physician and martyr, is honored for miracles and a blood relic said to liquefy each year.
Editorial Staff (27/07/2026, Gaudium Press) Saint Pantaleon was born in Nicomedia (or Nikomedia), in what is now Turkey, in the 3rd century, and died during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian on July 27, 305.
His father was a pagan, but his mother was a Christian. He was a physician.
He sees the miracles performed by Christian physicians
Although he received Christian formation, he allowed himself to be carried away by the torrent of vices of the pagan world, and he also renounced the faith of Christ. But a good Christian, probably a priest, named Hermolaus, was an instrument of God in bringing him back to the faith, and invited him to attain “the healing that comes from on High,” leading him to the Church. He also began to realize that some of the cures performed by Christian physicians had no natural explanation, and this too gradually brought him back to the faith of Christ.
Imbued, therefore, with the principles of the Christian faith, he used his medical art to care for the poor free of charge, and even distributed his wealth among them, which caused the envy of other physicians, who denounced him to the authorities as a Christian.
The emperor wanted to save him, but only if he renounced the faith
The emperor, who secretly wanted to save him, told him to apostatize, but the saint refused, and at that moment performed the miraculous healing of a paralytic to demonstrate that his faith was true.
The records of his martyrdom state that they tried to kill him in six different ways, but that through the special protection of the Lord they did not succeed: with fire, with molten lead, by drowning him, by throwing him to wild beasts, by torturing him, and by piercing him with a sword. Finally, he allowed them to behead him.
There are some relics of the blood that Saint Pantaleon shed in his martyrdom in Madrid, Constantinople, and Ravello, near Naples. The blood in Madrid was taken from that of Ravello.
The one in Madrid is kept in the Royal Monastery of the Incarnation, of the Augustinian Recollect nuns. It was given, together with a piece of bone, by the daughter of the Viceroy of Naples, who entered religious life with these Augustinians. Every year, before the saint’s feast day, that is, yesterday, without any human explanation, the blood, which is in a solid state, becomes liquid. The Church has not yet pronounced on this phenomenon, which has been repeated in the presence of many of the faithful.
It is claimed that when the blood does not return to its solid state, it may be a sign of bad events, as occurred with the two World Wars. This phenomenon that occurs with the Blood of Saint Pantaleon is analogous to what happens with the blood of Saint Januarius in Naples.
