The Apostolic Trip will be Pope Francis’ first in 2022.
Vatican City (10/02/2022 11:15 AM, Gaudium Press) The Holy See Press Office director, Matteo Bruni, announced this morning that Pope Francis will make an apostolic trip to Malta on April 2-3. The European country is located in the central Mediterranean region.
The visit was first scheduled to take place in 2020.
In this way, the Pontiff accepts an invitation made by the President of Malta, the authorities and the Catholic Church in the country. During the trip, Francis will visit the cities of Valletta, Rabat, Floriana and the island of Gozo. The Holy Father’s full programme will be released soon. This visit was scheduled to take place in May 2020. However, it had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
First international trip of the Pope in 2022
The trip to Malta will be the Pope’s first 2022 international trip. On February 27, the Pontiff will visit the Italian city of Florence to meet with Bishops and mayors of the Mediterranean. In Florence, he will also meet with refugee and migrant families.
Pope Francis’ last apostolic journey in 2021
The last apostolic trip made by Pope Francis took place between December 2 and 6, 2021, when he visited Cyprus and Greece. Two other Pontiffs have visited Malta: St John Paul II in 1990 and Benedict XVI in 2010. (EPC)
