Thousands joined celebrations at La Tirana Sanctuary as Chile commemorated the centenary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s coronation.
Newsroom (20/07/2026 Gaudium Press ) On the eve of the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, thousands of pilgrims gathered at the Sanctuary of La Tirana to participate in special celebrations marking the centenary of the Virgin’s coronation as Queen and Patron Saint of Chile.
The faithful assembled on the sanctuary’s esplanade on Wednesday evening for the traditional vigil Eucharist, presided over by the Bishop of Iquique, Monsignor Isauro Covili, and concelebrated by local clergy. The celebration formed part of the nationwide commemoration honoring one of the country’s most revered Marian devotions.
In his homily, Bishop Covili reflected on the enduring relationship between the Virgin and the Chilean people, affirming that “the Carmelite walks with her people.” He emphasized that Christianity is not defined by an absence of mistakes, but rather by the capacity for conversion, repentance, and reconciliation with God.
The bishop described the centenary of the coronation as “an invitation to recognize the presence and life of the Virgin who continues to accompany our people.” He highlighted the role of Mary throughout Chile’s history, describing her maternal presence as a source of consolation and a force for unity among the nation’s people.
Covili also called on the faithful to embrace evangelical service, urging them to become “disciples and missionaries of Jesus, self-sacrificing” and committed to building the common good. His message underscored the importance of active faith expressed through service to others and dedication to society.
Addressing contemporary challenges facing the Church and society, the prelate voiced concern for those who, in his words, “have stopped looking to heaven.” He also lamented situations in which parents request sacramental celebrations for their children while neglecting their Christian formation, stressing the need for a deeper engagement with the faith.
The bishop further referenced the teachings of Pope Leo XIV regarding the defense of human dignity, particularly in the face of emerging forms of modern slavery. He encouraged believers to uphold the value of every human person and to remain attentive to social realities that threaten dignity and freedom.
Concluding his homily, Covili prayed that “the Holy Virgin may reign in the heart of every pilgrim” and guide Chile “decisively towards fraternity, justice and peace.”
As midnight approached, one of the most anticipated moments of the celebrations took place with the traditional procession of the image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, affectionately known by devotees as “La Chinita.” The image was welcomed with applause and visible expressions of devotion from the thousands gathered at the sanctuary.
The centenary festivities continued throughout Thursday with a full program of religious activities, including Masses, rosaries, processions, confessions, and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The events formed part of a broader national celebration honoring Our Lady of Mount Carmel, whose centenary coronation remains a significant milestone in Chile’s religious and cultural life.
The commemorations at La Tirana once again demonstrated the enduring strength of Marian devotion in Chile, bringing together pilgrims from across the country in prayer, reflection, and celebration of their Queen and Patron Saint.
