Pope Leo XIV meets Cardinals Marx and Fernández as debate intensifies over German blessing guidelines for same-sex and irregular couples.

The meetings took place just five days after the publication of a letter from 26 priests of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising questioning Cardinal Marx’s decision to advance controversial pastoral guidelines that would implement such blessings within his archdiocese.
The Holy See Press Office confirmed the audiences but did not disclose the subjects discussed during the meetings, leaving observers to speculate about whether the issue of the German guidelines featured in the conversations.
Letter from Munich Priests Intensifies Scrutiny
The controversy surrounding Cardinal Marx centers on concerns raised by 26 priests from his archdiocese. In a letter sent to the cardinal in May, the priests expressed reservations about the application of Germany’s national guidelines on blessings for couples in irregular situations.
According to the signatories, the proposed guidelines appear to contradict established Church teaching and extend beyond the provisions set out in Fiducia supplicans, the Vatican declaration issued in 2023. The priests argued that the German approach risks exceeding the parameters defined by the Holy See.
In response, Cardinal Marx suggested implementing the guidelines for a one-year trial period. The proposal would serve as a pilot program, after which the results could be reviewed and evaluated together with clergy in the archdiocese.
The priests, however, indicated that they remain unconvinced by the archbishop’s explanations. They warned that if their concerns are not adequately addressed, they may appeal directly to the Holy See for clarification.
Fernández’s Presence Draws Particular Attention
The audience with Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández adds another layer of significance to the day’s meetings.
As prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, Fernández leads the Vatican office responsible for safeguarding Catholic doctrine. The dicastery published Fiducia supplicans in 2023, a document that permits spontaneous and brief blessings for individuals in irregular situations while explicitly excluding any ritual or practice that could resemble a marriage ceremony.
Since its publication, the declaration has generated extensive debate and differing interpretations across the Catholic world, making it one of the most discussed Vatican documents of recent years.
The doctrinal office has already demonstrated its interest in the German proposals. In May, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith released a letter that had originally been sent to German bishops in November 2024. In that correspondence, the Vatican raised several objections to draft blessing guidelines that closely resemble those the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising is now seeking to implement.
Against that backdrop, the appearance of both Marx and Fernández on Pope Leo XIV’s schedule on the same day inevitably attracted attention, even though the Vatican offered no indication that the discussions were connected.
Pope Leo XIV’s Previously Stated Position
The issue has also been shaped by statements previously made by Pope Leo XIV himself.
During a press conference aboard the return flight from his apostolic journey to Africa, the pontiff made clear that the Holy See does not support what he described as the “formalized blessing of couples.” He emphasized that practices extending beyond the framework established in Fiducia supplicans risk creating “more division than unity” within the Church.
Those comments have been widely viewed as a signal of the Vatican’s concern that local initiatives could move beyond the limits outlined in the 2023 declaration.
As questions continue to surround the German guidelines, the Pope’s earlier remarks remain an important reference point in assessing how the Holy See views proposals for more structured blessing practices.
Additional Vatican Meetings
Alongside the audiences with Cardinals Marx and Fernández, Pope Leo XIV met several other senior Vatican officials on Wednesday.
The pontiff received Monsignor Giordano Piccinotti, president of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (APSA), as well as Alessandro Cassinis Righini, the Auditor General of the Holy See.
Also among the day’s visitors were Sister Alessandra Smerilli, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Service of Integral Human Development, and Cardinal Fabio Baggio, Pro-Prefect of the same dicastery.
While the Vatican provided no details regarding the content of any of the meetings, the concurrent appearances of Cardinal Marx and Cardinal Fernández ensured that attention remained focused on the unresolved debate over Germany’s blessing guidelines and the broader interpretation of Fiducia supplicans within the Catholic Church.
