A group of men shot at Father Bett

The tragic episode occurred shortly after the priest celebrated Holy Mass at the Jumuiya (small Catholic community) in the village of Kakbiken. According to witness accounts, a group of armed men opened fire on Father Bett, who ended up being hit in the neck by one of the shots, which caused his immediate death.

Six suspects have been arrested by the police.

So far, six people allegedly involved in the priest’s murder have been detained by the local police. Initially, it was speculated that the case was an unsuccessful robbery attempt. Still, an official police spokesman assured that the crime had nothing to do with robbery or any other common criminal act in the region.

He was the second priest was killed in a week.

Some say that the criminals believed that the priest was working as an informer in a security operation in the area. Father Bett is the second Catholic priest to be murdered in Kenya in a week. On May 15, Father John Ndegwa Maina, parish priest of St. Aloysius Church in Igwamiti, died in hospital after being found seriously injured on a stretch of the Nakuru-Nairobi highway. (EPC)
