Pope Leo XIV called on European institutions to foster a “healthy secularism” that values religion while maintaining a clear distinction from the political sphere

Newsroom (29/09/2025, Gaudium PressIn a Monday address at the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV called on European institutions to foster a “healthy secularism” that values religion while maintaining a clear distinction from the political sphere. Speaking to the Working Group on Intercultural and Interreligious Dialogue, an initiative of the European Parliament, the pontiff emphasized the importance of dialogue rooted in Gospel values and human dignity.

“European institutions need people who know how to live a healthy secularism, that is, a style of thinking and acting that affirms the value of religion while preserving the distinction — not separation or confusion — from the political sphere,” Pope Leo XIV said.

The Pope expressed gratitude for the group’s efforts to promote intercultural and interreligious dialogue, describing it as a “key objective for a Christian politician.” He highlighted historical figures such as Robert Schuman, Konrad Adenauer, and Alcide De Gasperi as exemplars of this approach, noting their ability to integrate faith-inspired values with public service.

Rooted in Gospel Values

Central to the Pope’s message was the idea that effective dialogue requires participants to remain “deeply rooted in the Gospel and in the values that flow from it” while remaining open to others from diverse backgrounds. This balance, he argued, places the human person, dignity, and communal relationships at the forefront.

“Participation in interreligious dialogue, by its nature, recognizes that religion is of value both on a personal level and in the social sphere,” the Pope said, noting that the term “religion” itself derives from the concept of connection, a fundamental aspect of humanity.

He underscored that a well-cultivated religious dimension can strengthen interpersonal relationships and foster community cohesion. “And how important it is today to emphasize the value and importance of human relationships!” he added.

A Call for Authentic Engagement

Pope Leo XIV’s remarks come at a time when Europe faces increasing cultural and religious diversity, alongside debates about the role of faith in public life. His call for a “healthy secularism” seeks to bridge the gap between secular governance and the positive contributions of religious values, avoiding both the exclusion of faith and its overreach into political domains.

The Pope concluded by thanking the working group for its commitment to fostering dialogue and respect across communities, imparting his blessing on their efforts. The address reaffirms the Vatican’s ongoing emphasis on interreligious and intercultural engagement as essential to building a more cohesive and humane society.
