Pope Leo XIV highlights the Church’s universal mission of charity and dialogue during a meeting with Germany’s Archdiocese of Cologne, marking 50 years of global outreach.
Newsroom (30/04/2026 Gaudium Press) Pope Leo XIV emphasized the Catholic Church’s mission to bear witness to truth through charity while fostering global solidarity, during a meeting with a delegation from the Archdiocese of Cologne. The audience, held Thursday, marked the 50th anniversary of the Archdiocese’s Diocesan Office for the Universal Church and Dialogue.
Addressing the delegation, the Pope underscored the importance of the Church’s universal identity and its commitment to dialogue. He said that, in light of Christ’s Resurrection, the Church is sent to all peoples not by force, but through a witness grounded in charity. Dialogue, he added, plays a crucial role in strengthening communion, promoting understanding, and advancing peace.
A Model of Global Solidarity
Pope Leo XIV praised the Archdiocese of Cologne for what he described as its “prophetic openness” to the Church’s universal mission. This openness, he noted, is reflected in its long-standing commitment to encounter, mutual exchange, and dialogue across cultures and regions.
He pointed to historical milestones, including a partnership established with the Archdiocese of Tokyo in 1954, as well as the creation of major aid initiatives such as Misereor and Adveniat. These efforts, he said, exemplify a vision of the Church that extends beyond Europe and is rooted in solidarity and cooperation.
The Archdiocese has also played a foundational role in the Meeting of Aid Agencies for the Eastern Churches (ROACO), supporting communities affected by famine, flooding, and war. Additional initiatives include scholarships for seminarians and assistance programs for elderly priests.
Personal Reflection on Aid Efforts
The Pope recalled firsthand the impact of Cologne’s outreach during his time as Bishop of a Peruvian diocese. He highlighted the Archdiocese’s support in providing oxygen-producing machines, which he said saved many lives.
Through such acts of service, Pope Leo XIV said, the Church’s universal dimension becomes tangible, strengthening unity and offering a message of peace in a world often marked by division and hardship.
Continuing the Mission
In his concluding remarks, the Pope encouraged the Archdiocese of Cologne to continue its charitable mission, particularly in supporting Christians in the Middle East and displaced populations.
He urged them to persevere so that those facing hardship may continue to experience the closeness and solidarity of the universal Church.
