Pope Leo XIV blesses Gemelli’s new Centro Cuore, linking cardiovascular care with spiritual values rooted in the Sacred Heart tradition.

Newsroom (28/04/2026 Gaudium Press ) Pope Leo XIV on Monday presided over the blessing of the foundation stone for the “Centro Cuore – Papa Francesco,” a new cardiovascular facility at Rome’s Gemelli Polyclinic, describing the project as both a medical and spiritual undertaking rooted in the concept of the “heart.”

Addressing representatives of the hospital at the Vatican’s Consistory Hall, the Pope highlighted the dual meaning of “Cuore,” the Italian word for heart, which also serves as an acronym for “Cardiovascular Unique Offer ReEngineered.” He noted that the centre aims to consolidate cardiovascular care within a “person-centred organizational model,” calling it “a demanding challenge” to be pursued with “enthusiasm, collaboration and also prayer.”

Beyond its clinical function, Pope Leo emphasized the deeper symbolic significance of the name, linking it to the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, to which Gemelli Hospital belongs. He recalled a key moment in the university’s founding, when Blessed Armida Barelli insisted on naming the institution after the Sacred Heart despite concerns the title might seem overly devotional.

“That choice, which was prophetic at the time, remains so today,” the Pope said, pointing to Pope Francis’ final encyclical, Dilexit nos, dedicated to “the human and divine love of the Heart of Jesus Christ.”

Drawing from the encyclical, Pope Leo reflected on the heart as the “centre and synthesis of the human person,” encompassing spiritual, psychological, and physical dimensions. He cited its teaching that human beings are created “above all else for love,” adding that this vision should guide the formation of those working at Gemelli Hospital.

“The more ‘Gemelli’ grows,” he said, “the greater the care that must be taken over the human and Christian formation of those who work there.”

The Pope also underscored the theological dimension of the project, describing the love of Christ’s Heart as a “primary source of inspiration and support” that has historically motivated works of charity in education and healthcare. He placed the new centre within this tradition, alongside figures such as Father Agostino Gemelli and Blessed Armida Barelli.

Concluding his address, Pope Leo expressed confidence that Father Gemelli continues to accompany the institution’s development “from above,” particularly the realization of the Centro Cuore. He then formally blessed the foundation stone, invoking the intercession of Mary as “Seat of Wisdom and Health of the Sick.”

The Centro Cuore is envisioned as a major expansion of Gemelli’s medical services, combining advanced cardiovascular treatment with a holistic approach grounded in the Catholic intellectual and spiritual tradition.
