Cardinal Pietro Parolin expressed profound dismay at the ongoing violence in Gaza, describing the situation as “increasingly complicated” and “precarious”

Newsroom (26/08/2025, Gaudium Press ) Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, expressed profound dismay at the ongoing violence in Gaza, describing the situation as “increasingly complicated” and “precarious” from a humanitarian perspective. Speaking on the sidelines of the Liturgical Week’s inauguration, the Cardinal condemned the recent Israeli airstrike on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, which claimed 20 lives, including five journalists. “We are appalled by what is happening in Gaza, despite the condemnation of the whole world,” he said, emphasizing a global consensus against the violence. “It makes no sense,” he added, noting the apparent absence of viable solutions to end the crisis.

Turning to the war in Ukraine, Cardinal Parolin called for robust political efforts to achieve peace. “There are many possible solutions and many paths that could lead to peace,” he said, but stressed that these require practical implementation and a willingness to act. “It requires dispositions of the spirit,” he noted, underscoring the need for resolve and commitment to dialogue.

The Cardinal framed his remarks within the context of the upcoming Jubilee announced by Pope Leo XIV, which will focus on hope. “There is a need for hope for the whole world,” Parolin said, describing the Jubilee as “a moment of regaining hope” in a world where reasons for optimism are scarce, particularly on the international stage. He acknowledged the challenges in fostering peace amid ongoing conflicts but urged perseverance. “We must not give in to resignation,” he insisted, advocating for continued efforts toward peace and reconciliation.
