The Pope commended the priests for their “delicate and necessary ministry of exorcism” and encouraged them to approach it as a vital service of “liberation and consolation” for those afflicted by evil.
Newsroom (23/09/2025, Gaudium Press ) Pope Leo XIV delivered a heartfelt message to approximately 300 exorcist priests gathered for the 15th International Convegno of the International Association of Exorcists (IAE), held from September 15 to 20, 2025, at the “Fraterna Domus” spirituality house near Rome. In his address, the Holy Father commended the priests for their “delicate and necessary ministry of exorcism” and encouraged them to approach it as a vital service of “liberation and consolation” for those afflicted by evil.
The Pope’s message, conveyed through a letter signed by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State, was read at the congress’s opening by Father Francesco Bamonte, IAE vice president and event moderator. Pope Leo XIV emphasized the importance of supporting the faithful “truly possessed by evil” through prayer and invoking Christ’s transformative presence, so the sacrament of exorcism may secure “victory over Satan.”
A Ministry Rooted in Ecclesial Communion
The biennial congress, a cornerstone of the IAE’s mission, featured reflections on the theological and practical dimensions of exorcism. Bishop Karel Orlita, IAE president and exorcist of the Diocese of Brno, Czech Republic, underscored the beauty of the Church’s communion, which anchors this Gospel-based ministry. He highlighted the Association’s commitment to ongoing formation for exorcists in Italy and worldwide, noting the recent milestone of surpassing 1,000 members. Bishop Orlita also celebrated the Dicastery for the Clergy’s approval of the IAE’s new Statute on March 25, 2025, as a testament to the Church’s endorsement of their mission.
Theological and Practical Insights
The congress addressed critical topics in exorcism, with organizers emphasizing their theological and practical significance. Bishop Aurelio García Macías, Undersecretary of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, offered a detailed review of the Rite of Exorcisms. His presentation covered extraordinary diabolical actions, the exorcist’s role, the significance of ritual signs, and the correction of common errors, all while stressing Christ’s centrality in the rite.
Cardinal Arthur Roche, prefect of the same Dicastery, presided over the inaugural Mass, reinforcing the Church’s solidarity with those suffering from demonic influence. His presence underscored the Vatican’s commitment to supporting this specialized ministry.
Honoring a Legacy
The congress also paid tribute to Father Gabriele Amorth, the IAE’s founder and first president, who passed away nine years ago. His enduring legacy continues to inspire the Association’s work in combating spiritual affliction.
The 15th International Convegno reaffirmed the IAE’s role as a vital resource for exorcists, fostering unity, formation, and fidelity to the Church’s mission in a world grappling with spiritual challenges.
