The Papal Foundation visits Rome, strengthening ties with the Vatican while advancing global aid efforts for vulnerable communities.

Newsroom (01/05/2026 Gaudium Press) A delegation from The Papal Foundation has arrived in Rome for a multi-day pilgrimage aimed at deepening its collaboration with the Holy See and reaffirming its commitment to supporting vulnerable communities worldwide. The visit, running from April 29 to May 2, brings together representatives from the United States and Canada for a program centered on faith, formation, and global outreach.

At the heart of the pilgrimage is a scheduled meeting with Pope Leo XIV, underscoring the Foundation’s close relationship with the Vatican and its role in advancing the Church’s charitable mission.

Spiritual Foundation and Formation

The pilgrimage opened with a Mass at St. Mary of the Angels, celebrated by Archbishop James Checchio. In his homily, he reminded participants of their calling to act as apostles of the Risen Christ, framing the Foundation’s philanthropic work as an extension of Christian witness.

The program also included visits to key Vatican institutions. On the second day, participants toured Vatican Radio and Vatican News, gaining insight into the Church’s global communication efforts. Meetings were held with senior Vatican officials, including Paolo Ruffini, Prefect of the Dicastery for Communication; Editorial Director Andrea Tornielli; Theological-Pastoral Director Nataša Govekar; and Sister Nina Krapić, Deputy Director of the Holy See Press Office.

Among the initiatives discussed was the Vatican News widget, described by Pope Leo XIV as a tool for evangelization that fosters connection and the exchange of spiritual and cultural gifts.

A Mission Rooted in Service

During a welcome reception in Rome, leaders of The Papal Foundation outlined the organization’s mission and impact. President Ward Fitzgerald emphasized its purpose: to serve the Holy Father and the global Church by offering faith, resources, and energy to support those most in need.

Founded in 1988, the U.S.-based organization has distributed more than 270 million dollars in charitable, educational, and humanitarian aid across over 130 countries. Its work spans a wide range of initiatives, including rebuilding churches, supporting schools and orphanages, funding healthcare centers, and assisting marginalized populations, particularly children at risk of exclusion.

Measurable Global Impact

Vice President Tim Ristoff highlighted the scale of the Foundation’s contributions, particularly in Africa. Since 1997, the organization has awarded 855 general grants totaling 63 million dollars. In addition, 69 humanitarian grants worth 4.9 million dollars have been distributed since 2011.

The Foundation has also invested in education through the Saint John Paul II Scholarship Program, which has supported 2,700 students.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, chairman of the Board of Trustees, described these efforts as a direct expression of the universal Church’s mission, providing tangible assistance to communities facing hardship.

Growth and Renewed Commitment

The Rome gathering also served as a moment to reflect on the Foundation’s recent growth. Over the past 18 months, 27 new donor families have joined, helping the organization reach nearly half of its five-year fundraising goal.

The pilgrimage, including a visit to the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See, reflects a broader effort to strengthen partnerships and expand the Foundation’s reach.

As the delegation concludes its visit, the trip stands as both a reaffirmation of longstanding commitments and a signal of continued expansion. With renewed ties to Vatican leadership and growing support from donors, The Papal Foundation is positioning itself to further its mission of serving the world’s most vulnerable populations.
