Newsroom (02/06/2025 20:31, Gaudium Press) Pope Leo XIV has appointed Dr. Luigi Carbone as Director of the Health and Hygiene Directorate of the Vatican City State Governorate. Dr. Carbone previously served as Deputy Director of the same entity and is remembered for having been Pope Francis’ doctor. Dr. Carbone will take up the post on August 1. He is chief physician at the Gemelli Polyclinic, in the area of Emergency and Admission Medicine and Surgery. Dr. Carbone is the director of the emergency department at “Gemelli Isola”, the Fatebenefratelli hospital on Tiberina Island. He is also a university professor at several medical schools. Together with Dr. Sergio Alfieri, he took part in the press conferences that reported on Francis’ state of health.
