Cardinal Frank Leo to represent Pope Leo XIV at the October 31, 2026 beatification of the Georgia Martyrs in Savannah, Georgia.

Newsroom (14/04/2026 Gaudium Press)  Cardinal Frank Leo, Metropolitan Archbishop of Toronto, has been appointed by Pope Leo XIV as the Papal Legate to preside over the beatification of the Georgia Martyrs—Friar Pedro de Corpa and his four Franciscan Companions—on October 31, 2026, in Savannah, Georgia. The announcement marks a historic occasion for the Catholic Church in the United States and particularly for the Southern dioceses, as this will be the first beatification ever held in Georgia and in the American South.

The ceremony will honor Friar Pedro de Corpa, OFM, and four fellow missionaries—Blas Rodríguez, Miguel de Añon, Antonio de Badajóz, and Francisco de Veráscola—who were martyred in 1597 on the coast of present-day Georgia. Their sacrifice, remembered for over four centuries, represents a profound chapter in the history of evangelization and faith in the early mission territories of North America.

Honoring Martyrs of the American Mission

Cardinal Leo will preside over the solemn liturgy alongside the Most Reverend Stephen D. Parkes, Bishop of Savannah, as the five missionaries are formally declared “Blessed.” The rite of beatification will celebrate their enduring witness to the Gospel, their courage in the face of persecution, and their dedication to reconciliation through faith.

Reflecting on his appointment as Papal Legate, Cardinal Leo expressed deep humility and spiritual joy:

“The beatification of Friar Pedro de Corpa and his Companions is a powerful reminder that the Gospel of Christ has taken root in every land through the faithful witness of those willing to give everything for the Lord Jesus, including their very life. In the communion of saints, their courage and charity continue to inspire the Church to proclaim the Good News with fidelity and constancy. I am humbled and honoured to represent His Holiness Pope Leo XIV as his legate and to join the pastors and all faithful in this momentous celebration of faith, indeed a profound moment of prayer and thanksgiving for the life, witnessing and intercession of Venerable Pedro de Corpa and his Companions.”

A Moment of Faith and History

The Most Reverend Stephen D. Parkes underscored the profound significance of the celebration for both the Diocese of Savannah and the Archdiocese of Atlanta. “Their beatification will be a date of great significance for the faithful within the Diocese of Savannah and the Archdiocese of Atlanta,” Bishop Parkes said. “The year is also noteworthy, as these Franciscan friars will be declared ‘Blessed’ while the Catholic Church honors the 800th anniversary of the death of their order’s founder, St. Francis of Assisi, in 1226.”

This forthcoming beatification follows Pope Francis’ formal approval on January 27, 2025, of the decree recognizing Friar Pedro de Corpa and his Companions as true martyrs for Christ, slain in odium fidei (“in hatred of the faith”). Their witness continues to inspire devotion across the Americas as examples of selfless missionary zeal and unwavering love for the Gospel.

Details regarding the ceremony and related events in Savannah will be announced closer to the date, as the Church prepares to celebrate this landmark moment in faith, history, and remembrance.
