An Italian parish investigates a reported tear of blood on a Padre Pio statue, urging faith, prudence, and formal Vatican-led discernment.

Newsroom (25/06/2026  Gaudium Press ) The quiet parish of Santa Maria delle Grazie in the small Italian town of Casalba has been thrust into unexpected prominence following reports that a statue of St. Padre Pio appeared to shed a tear resembling blood. The development, first noticed in April, has sparked both spiritual reflection among the faithful and careful scrutiny from church authorities.

A Discovery That Sparked Attention

The unusual phenomenon came to light when a parishioner observed what appeared to be a reddish tear descending from the left eye of the statue of the revered Capuchin friar from Pietrelcina. The statue, positioned at the entrance of the church and in place for approximately two decades, had long been a familiar sight to worshippers.

Upon being notified, the parish priest, Father Girolamo Capuano, promptly visited the church to assess the situation. Efforts to remove the stain proved unsuccessful, leading to the decision to remove the statue for further examination. The goal of the inquiry is to determine the origin and composition of the substance, including whether it contains hemoglobin or another material.

Calls for Prudence Amid Growing Interest

Speaking publicly about the incident, Father Capuano emphasized a measured and responsible approach. He stated that bringing attention to the event was not intended to generate publicity but rather to clarify facts and avoid speculation.

He described such occurrences as potential “signs” meant to be shared cautiously, highlighting the importance of “prudence, love, and discernment.” At the same time, the priest acknowledged that experiences of this nature often inspire individuals to deepen or begin a journey of faith.

Despite his personal conviction that the phenomenon could represent “an authentic sign that comes from God,” Father Capuano has urged patience while formal investigations proceed.

Surveillance Footage Adds to the Mystery

A notable element in the case is the church’s surveillance system, which has continuously monitored the statue for more than a decade. According to Father Capuano, a detailed review of footage covering April 1 to April 30 revealed no visible interference.

The tear was first observed on April 18. Crucially, the footage showed that no individuals approached or tampered with the statue at any time during that period, either during the day or at night. For the priest, this absence of human involvement strengthens his personal belief that the occurrence defies simple explanation.

He also pointed to additional peculiarities, including the statue’s fiberglass composition and the precise path of the tear. The coloring of the substance and the perfection of its trajectory have raised further questions, with Capuano remarking that even a master artist would struggle to replicate such detail.

Scientific Examination Underway

Despite the intrigue surrounding the incident, the Church has taken a cautious stance. The statue has been removed for technical analysis, and the outcome of these tests will be central to determining the nature of the phenomenon.

Father Capuano remains resolute in his faith, stating that regardless of the scientific findings, such conclusions would not diminish the spiritual convictions of believers. “They cannot take our faith away from us,” he affirmed.

A Recall of Past Incidents

The current event is not without precedent in Casalba. In 2015, reports circulated of an image of the Virgin Mary appearing to weep in the same town. However, subsequent investigations attributed that phenomenon to rainwater seepage rather than any supernatural cause.

This earlier case serves as a reminder of the need for caution and rigorous examination in assessing unusual religious claims.

Vatican Procedures Now in Motion

In line with the Catholic Church’s updated 2024 Norms for Proceeding in the Discernment of Alleged Supernatural Phenomena, the case has entered a formal evaluation process.

The preliminary investigation will be led by Pietro Lagnese, bishop of the Diocese of Capua. His assessment will involve consultation with the bishops’ conference and oversight from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF), the Vatican body responsible for doctrinal matters.

Under the established guidelines, the bishop must thoroughly examine the evidence before submitting his findings to the Dicastery. The DDF will then evaluate both the material and the methodology used in the investigation.

Importantly, until a definitive judgment is issued, Church authorities are required to refrain from making any public declarations regarding the authenticity or supernatural character of the phenomenon.

Faith and Inquiry Intersect

As the investigation unfolds, Santa Maria delle Grazie parish stands at the intersection of faith and inquiry. For some, the reported tear is a powerful spiritual sign; for others, it is a mystery awaiting explanation.

In either case, the Church’s structured approach reflects a long-standing effort to balance openness to the transcendent with careful discernment—a process that now continues under the watchful eye of both believers and investigators alike.
