Pope Leo XIV met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Thursday, calling for an urgent ceasefire in Gaza

Newsroom (05/09/2025, Gaudium Press ) Pope Leo XIV met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Thursday, calling for an urgent ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, and unimpeded humanitarian aid to the region. The private audience, held in the Apostolic Palace, underscored the Holy See’s push for a two-state solution as the only viable path to lasting peace in the Middle East.

Herzog later met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, and Archbishop Paul R. Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations. The discussions focused on the dire political and social situation in the Middle East, with particular emphasis on the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

A statement from the Holy See Press Office described the talks as “cordial” and highlighted shared hopes for a swift resumption of negotiations. The Vatican stressed the need for “willingness and courageous decisions,” supported by the international community, to secure the release of hostages, establish a permanent ceasefire, ensure safe delivery of humanitarian aid, and uphold humanitarian law. The statement also emphasized respect for the “legitimate aspirations” of both Israelis and Palestinians.

The Holy See reiterated its longstanding position that a two-state solution is essential to resolving the conflict. Discussions also touched on the situation in the West Bank and the status of Jerusalem, a city of profound significance to both parties.

The talks acknowledged the historical ties between the Holy See and Israel, as well as the vital role of Christian communities in the region. These communities, the statement noted, contribute significantly to education, social cohesion, and regional stability across the Middle East.

The meeting comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with Gaza facing severe humanitarian challenges. Pope Leo XIV’s appeal reflects the Vatican’s ongoing commitment to fostering peace and supporting dialogue between conflicting parties.
