The call came hours after the Israeli army launched a large-scale ground offensive in northwestern Gaza, with local media reporting 37 attacks in just 20 minutes, prompting a mass exodus of residents.
According to Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, Fr. Romanelli updated the Holy Father on the dire situation at Holy Family Parish, which has become a refuge for approximately 450 people. Despite a June Israeli raid that injured Fr. Romanelli and damaged the parish, the church continues to distribute meals and water, maintain an internal pharmacy, and provide activities for children and youth through its oratory. The parish also offers critical assistance to the elderly and sick amid the escalating conflict.
“Pope Leo expressed deep concern for the situation in Gaza,” Bruni told reporters, “and assured Father Gabriel and all those who turn to the parish of his spiritual closeness and prayers.”
Ongoing Support Amid Crisis
The Tuesday call follows a pattern of regular communication between Pope Leo XIV and the Gaza parish. Since the outbreak of war in the Middle East, the Pope has made nightly video calls at 7:00 PM to Fr. Romanelli and his vicar, Father Youssef Asad, to monitor the welfare of the parish community. Last week, after Israel issued an immediate evacuation order for Gaza City residents, Pope Leo attempted to contact Fr. Romanelli but initially received no response, as the priest and parishioners were engaged in a lengthy liturgical celebration.
Fr. Romanelli later confirmed the conversation via social media, describing it as “a great joy” and “blessing” in a video shared with Vatican News. The Pope’s frequent calls underscore his ongoing commitment to supporting the parish, which he has reinforced through repeated public appeals for peace in the region.
Prayer Amid Bombings
On Monday, Fr. Romanelli posted a 30-second video on his X and Instagram accounts, capturing the sounds of bombings during a liturgy at Holy Family Parish. Despite the chaos, the faithful continued their prayers in silence, demonstrating resilience in the face of violence.
