Newsroom (13/07/2025, Gaudium Press) The Diocese of Enugu, Nigeria, organized a multitudinous Eucharistic celebration in which 983 Christians, including adolescents and adults, received the sacrament of Confirmation. The ceremony was presided over during Holy Mass by Auxiliary Bishop Ernest Obodo and was attended by thousands of faithful in an act of hope and spiritual strengthening.

God is at work in the Diocese

In his homily, the prelate explained the spiritual significance of this high number of confirmations, emphasizing that this represents a clear sign of divine action. Speaking about the action of the Holy Spirit, Bishop Obodo assured: “He takes away our heart of stone and gives us a new spirit, transforming us into new creatures. Although we do not see him, we feel his impact. Like wind and fire, the Spirit purifies us, sanctifies us and strengthens us.”

Rising violence against Christians in Nigeria

It is important to note that this remarkable act of faith comes in the midst of increasing violence against Christians in Nigeria. Just days later, in Benue State, a terrorist massacre orchestrated by radical Fulani herdsmen claimed the lives of two hundred Christians. In addition, the number of kidnapped priests in the north of the country has increased, some with fatal consequences.

Increase in the number of Catholics in the country

Despite this hostility, the country has experienced a steady increase in the number of Catholics, reaching 35 million faithful. In 2023, Africa recorded a net increase of 9 million Catholics, representing an increase of 3.31% over 2022. This figure contrasts sharply with the decline in Catholicism observed in Europe.(EPC)
